The Mitchell Report (Names Added)

The other guy that I think is cemented in Cooperstown is Ken Griffey Jr. It's obvious the guy's clean - he's not big and bulky like the other power hitters - he just has an unbelievably sweet swing that no other power hitter in baseball has. It's just too bad the guy ran into injuries as I think he would have easily taken Bonds out, and he would have done it without the juice.

Completely agree. While I already stated that I think Frank Thomas was the best clean RH hitter of the '90s (he may have been the best even when you consider the cheaters), Griffey was the best LH hitter of the same era.

I think Frank Thomas cemented his spot in Cooperstown by cooperating with this report. He was probably the most dominant RH hitter in the '90s, and anyone in their right mind knows he did it cleanly.

Does anyone else think it's a little suspicious that the Yankees and A-Rod finalized their deal on the day that the Mitchell Report was released? You suppose the Yankees were waiting to see if someone's name in particular was on that list before they made such an investment? The Astros should have done the same thing.

I personally don't think the Yankees were waiting to see and I personally don't think the Astros really care (except from a PR standpoint).

The reality is that a big reason this problem (performance enhancing drugs) was allowed to continue on for as long as it did is because the clubs just looked the other way...all they want is to win and fill the stands...frankly, I don't think they give a damn how it happens.

This really hasn't changed...you remember how many "second chances" Steve Howe was given back in the day. More recently, look how long it took Ricky Williams to get back on the field after coming off suspension...less than a week, I believe. Same thing will happen with Vick...he will be signed by someone as soon as he is out of prison and able to do so.

The only concern these clubs may have is that they may have signed a player that will have his production decrease if he goes off the juice and they paid for the big production.

Apparantly Mitchell tipped off Epstein befor they traded for Gagne that he was coming off the juice and may not be as good... I guess that was the understatement of the year...

By no means am I saying that as an excuse, it's just another thing to think about. Having played minor league ball I am very happy this came out. It's a strange situation in a clubhouse when you are competing with 24 other guys for a spot at the next level and you are wondering who is doing it the right way and who is getting an edge. I have known alot of people who have fallen into the trap, it's tempting, you have guys all over getting an edge in a situation where you are trying to put food on your table. Especially in the minor leagues you have guys making $600-1000 a month for six months, a far cry from the minimum $300,000 just for making a big league roster. I know that I have personally been offered a shortcut, and it took me a long time to decide not to. If I thought it would have given me enough of an edge to get there then I would have. In the end, I just felt it would have made me better, but not better enough to make that jump...

Props to you for staying clean! I'm sure it can be awfully tempting to do it when you can make significantly more money if your production goes up.

Heck, just look at Clemens...he had his last losing record in 96 with the Red Sox. They (along with many others) thought he was washed up. Apparently, he started "enhancing" and is able to extend his career and make well over $80 million since that time.

You wonder why a guy would risk doing this stuff...Clemens can give you 80 million reasons!

Bob Costas is going to be on Dan Patrick here in a couple of minutes. I'm curious to hear his take since he has been absolutely killing Bonds over the last few years. He better be just as harsh to his buddies Clemens and Pettite...

I'm curious too...don't listen to his show so let me know what he said.

I did perceive that ESPN kept the gloves on with respect to Clemens yesterday whereas they have taken them off with respect to Bonds. I guess that's the kind of help you will get when you are their favorite athlete to include in the "This is SportsCenter" ads! It will be interesting to see if they put a reporter on Clemens like they did with Bonds (Pedro Gomez).

Costas danced around it and didn't even answer questions in regards to Pettite. They had a guy from Houston papers on and he was talking about a trip to the pentagon where guys were raving about the size of Pettite's arms. At first I thought Pettite was just a big guy, but having looked back you see alot of the same changes as Bonds, bigger build, bigger head, etc...

Interesting. I listened to Rome some today and he was also far less harsh with Clemens than he has been with Bonds...claiming they are two totally different situations.

It seems to me that Clemens (and the others in this report) are getting far kinder treatment than Bonds has received...the whole spectacle fascinates me...even our sports reporters are showing their unadulterated biases.

Jim Rome made a good point yesterday. We have had numerous issues come forwad regarding Bonds for several years now so theres no way to 'equal' the treatment for Clemens and others in an hour. If this info proves to be as reasonably credible as the dirt on Bonds I expect these guys to get hammered too. It will not likely be quite as bad though since it will be spread out and in Clemens case he likely won't be playing and breaking records any longer. Lastly, Bonds acts like an a-hole so its easier to rag on the guy.
