The Band

We usually have seats so high up at Hilton that other than music, I don't even notice the band. Maybe those annoyed could trade me tickets. We really enjoy sitting near the marching band somewhere on the north side, they seem to add a lot to the experience at JTS, although I thought that wedding halftime show was pretty lame. I thought our high school was alone in having our fabulous football team (two wins over the last three years) bully our marching band, but given the tone here, that may be the norm.

Meh...Happens at least once a year! No big deal!

Yeah,l i would agree with the above post that the band has definitely upped the degree to which they do those things this year, and last year was more than the year before that.

Honestly though, the same free throw chants\jokes every game gets old. What was amusing the first time (things like 'block that kick') aren't that amusing years and hundreds of times later. If you're going to keep doing it, at least have some originality. Or just give up on those and just be loud.... that might actually push the rest of the students into being loud with you.

It honestly surprises me a little that it's gotten worse (and I haven't sat close enough to the band at any basketball games the last couple yearsto really know). To my eyes, the new director has really seemed to "get it" in terms of what the bands role is on gameday. You'd think there'd be more encouragement for the band to work with the students and not alienate them.

That being said, there is still a ridiculous amount of hipper than thou attitude coming from the students posting in this thread.

ok i feel as a student who sits literally within arms reach of the band for the last 4 years it is my duty to weigh in.
side note: i was in band 4 years of HS and love music and still own my sax so I can see from both sides here...

Me and 3 friends have sat in the same spot for almost every home game as long as we have been at school. NEVER has the band bothered us by their chants or tomfoolery... most years it is actually something we laugh about after the games!

THIS YEAR IS SOOOOOOOOO SO SO SO different. Holy Sh**... it is literally one guy leading the charge in the tuba section and has somehow got the rest of the band to think it HILARIOUS to yell the most random thing on the planet!

On our drive to okoboji grill for postgame shenanigans my friends and I talked in length and decided that the band has no strategy except to think of the most random TOTALLY NON BASKETBALL related word... mash it together with the words HOOP or BALL and yell really loud and then all laugh hysterically if something happens to go wrong for whatever sister of the poor team we are playing...

It's NOT funny, it's VERY annoying and it needs to be toned the Hell down. I cant wait for conference season to start so then the students can out volume the band.

PS: I was on my phone last night quite a bit for fantasy football reasons and keeping up with other scores so get off mai back!!!

To change the tone slightly...

For those in the MBB pep band, is there a good quality recording somewhere of the MBB pep band doing the ISU fight song? The versions on cyclones.com are all of the Marching Band.

Thanks!

Not really. I think most of us are agreeing that yelling those unoriginal chants are stupid.

The thing is, if they were cheering normally, other people would join them, thus increasing the volume in Hilton.
That's what increases the atmosphere, which is what the band is there for.
There's a reason people aren't joining them during their chants.

Yep. Nothing wrong with showing enthusiasm and cheering (which the regular student section needs to do a better job of, anyway), but chanting stuff that is neither creative, nor funny is not going to help.

Not from me!! Like ive stated i LOVE the band! I have 2 friends in pep band and I love that I watch them when the really dumb chants start and they just look at each the same way the student section does with that "Really band? The ball is a rubber chicken? REALLY?!?!"

Like I stated normall the band is pretty funny in years past it just seems there is one guy in the tuba/sousaphone section that needs to stop thinking he is a male cheerleader!

At one point, the chants were much more creative, but then they got shot down because they were too personal in nature. Chanting the players' mom's name while he was shooting free throws, mocking their choices in TV shows, stuff like that.

I agree that the band is very annoying this year. they act like a bunch of 5th graders at a carnival. They need to grow up a little

This seems to be the general attitude I've seen the last few times I've been back to Campus. I hate going to Welch anymore...

And I'm not just saying that because of the thread, this is a discussion my friends and I had on Welch last year

I can't think of one tuba/sousaphone player that I've ever met that would look good in a male (or female) cheerleader outfit. Wait...nope, not one.

Your screen name is goclones69, and I'm pretty confident that you weren't born in 1969 and that you didn't graduate in 1969 based on your post.

Of course you would find the flaw in my logic. Shoot.

Well, jimlad implied. Statistically, prolly same odds as being born in '69 or graduated in '69.

<dude, I just said '69' like twice in that post...hehhhehehhehehhehehehehehehehehhhhheeeeeee!>

Whoa... you're right.

I hope you all realize that the band is now going to ramp up their stupid chants due to all your *******. In case you havent noticed- "The ball is a rubber chicken" came courtesy of this very thread.
