Talent on a new level

The team was sloppy last night, primarily in the first half...they just had a week off and that showed early. They had 16 points at the 10 minute point...scored 78 points in the last 30. The team is going to get better...Prohm's trademarks are guard development and defense...already starting to see this, but a lot of room for further improvement.

My biggest area for concern is stopping the drive. We've given up a ton of easy baskets off dribble penetration. I also think that Beverly and Brase are going to struggle on the defensive end in conference play as well.

We have a lot to work on defensively, for sure. Stopping dribble penetration, covering pick and rolls and defensive positioning for rebounds are gonna be things we need to improve on before we face other Big XII teams.

I'll throw one other concern in the mix. I'm hoping we work on our inbounding or we're gonna have fits against Huggy Bear. We haven't exactly had turnovers, but we've looked pretty ugly at times getting the ball into play when faced with pressure.

I think key will be defensive progression. The guys like to leave their feet on 3 point attempts a lot instead of closing out and putting a hand to the face. They clean that up and it'll help. Also defensive help side seems late on dribble penetration, along with cleaning the hedges up. By years end, Prohm will likely have this team much better on that end.

They'll have off shooting nights. I anticipate Wigginton or Babb would try driving more to score, but Lard and Young will need to keep gaining confidence to sure up stuff underneath. You can see they are giving them the ball quicker when lanes are open now. The ball movement has improved substantially and it's obvious they are at their best when running. But as someone else pointed out, the fact that the team dealt with a little first half adversity and then showing adjustments in the second half is a great learning experience moving forward. It shows they have a little mental strength and to not lose focus for a young team.

I like where this team is heading in terms of being ahead of schedule. I'll temper some excitement knowing big 12 play should bring more intensity both defensively and offensively, but hopefully our guys will have progressed enough on both D and O to be competitive night in and night out. We never know, Prohm did get those guys in the tourney last year and we had our heavy doubts early on.

Media and fans keep saying this. Why? I don't see it.

There are a several good players on the roster but they're not exactly loaded. They have a massive hole at PG and Fran's patented twelve man rotation isn't doing them any favors either. I honestly think that if you're looking for a good measuring stick game for ISU it's the UNI game at the Big Four Classic.

This is where I'm going to disagree with you. Iowa claims they have depth and they may, but I think everyone around here can agree that they will get in their own way. Meaning, Fran is going to play 10-12 guys thinking there's great depth, only to disallow team build/chemistry. You sub like his patterns, this doesn't allow any gelling. Plus, look at their confidence level. I watched some of the Indiana game last night and their offense is very shaky. They look lost. Then Fran will chew his players out, thus further diminishing their confidence. Fran may be a great guy, but I'm not a fan of his coaching style.

I expect a close game tomorrow because it is a rivalry, but by no means are the two teams on the same trajectory right now.

Has anybody EVER said this?

The Boise State win is looking better and better...they beat Oregon by 3 on Oregon's home floor. Oregon isn't the Oregon on last 2 years, but still pretty decent.

We have been shooting well from deep over last 5 games. Can we win a game when we go 2 for 15 from outside the arc? I have my doubts. Last year's team scored enough points off turnovers and dribble penetration to win some of those games.

Lindell doesn't have doubts.

Yeah, I remember drives given up by NWB, DJ, Lard, Lewis and Wiggington that stuck out. And we don't yet get enough defensive rotation to help on those. Thankfully, Lard is going to develop into a rim-protector.

That's part of it, but also there are 3-4 guys who should just never be on the floor for any decent team. He should bench them until they are good enough to play, and if they don't get there he should help them find a new school.

My expectations for BB are about what my FB expectations were. Young talent, a couple veterans, but likely a year away from something fun.

But who knows? Maybe the team will jell and we'll win a few games we shouldn't?

I'm not expecting tourney, but I wasn't expecting Bowl Game either. ;)
