Talent on a new level

This team will be lucky to go 500 in conference but the experience gained will be monumental for next season.
Agree. I can't fathom this team having enough capability inside to do much better than that bu it should be entertaining.

Even though they were all seniors last year, it took a while to figure out how to play without Niang and largely without a reliable post presence.

This team is starting from scratch and imo has more natural chemistry.

I think they're capable of playing with and beating B12 teams; the key will be late-game situations. Those seem to hinder young teams.

My biggest area for concern is stopping the drive. We've given up a ton of easy baskets off dribble penetration. I also think that Beverly and Brase are going to struggle on the defensive end in conference play as well.

Oklahoma went 5-13 in conference last year yet finished in a respectable position on KenPom (don't have the exact number but believe between 60 and 70). We are going to project similarly in conference this year at 5 or 6 wins and will likely finish as a team that is better than our record shows. However, an attainable short term goal for this team should be to finish December 4-0 in the non-conference. If you do that, you're at least in a position to where if you get better/a little lucky and win 8 in the big 12 and 1 or 2 in KC you're right there for dance consideration. Will be crucial to get a couple wins the first few games against KState, Texas, and @Ok State before @KU, Baylor, @TCU.

As long as they make 14 3-pointers/game, I think they will be solid.

It's a development year and they are already making good, steady progress. As someone posted in another thread a couple weeks ago, enjoy the wins, ignore the losses, look for development from the underclassmen.

We have been shooting well from deep over last 5 games. Can we win a game when we go 2 for 15 from outside the arc? I have my doubts. Last year's team scored enough points off turnovers and dribble penetration to win some of those games.

Yeah I agree. The only game I have watched this year was our second when we played really awful. It sounds like the team has gelled since then and we need some confidence boosting wins like we had last night.

I think the Iowa game will be a good test. They aren't showing it, but think Iowa has more talent and depth than they have had in a while. For a young team like we have it could go anyway depending on what team shows up to play.

Lot of games left to play and a lot of development and learning still needs to occur.

This is where I'm going to disagree with you. Iowa claims they have depth and they may, but I think everyone around here can agree that they will get in their own way. Meaning, Fran is going to play 10-12 guys thinking there's great depth, only to disallow team build/chemistry. You sub like his patterns, this doesn't allow any gelling. Plus, look at their confidence level. I watched some of the Indiana game last night and their offense is very shaky. They look lost. Then Fran will chew his players out, thus further diminishing their confidence. Fran may be a great guy, but I'm not a fan of his coaching style.

I expect a close game tomorrow because it is a rivalry, but by no means are the two teams on the same trajectory right now.

Sounds like 1. a lot of respect for the program that's been built, and 2. someone who hasn't seen the boys play this year yet. I like reading it though!

I've watched that site for the last few years. I think their formula has a fair share of recency bias built in. It is a computer formula, running on nothing but data, which we don't have a lot of data points yet.

That’s the thing- the Big 12 is the toughest conference. We could be a top-50 or top-60 team and not be the “better” team in any game. In 2010-11 we lost a ton of close games which resulted in a horrible conference record despite not being that bad. I’m guessing that this year will be similar.

That team had three good guards in DG, Scotty, and Anderson, and Ejim, Godfrey, and JVB are fairly similar to what we’re getting out of our forwards now. That said I’m of the viewpoint that JVB was very underrated. I’d take a JVB on every roster.

To be fair, I'd have my doubts on just about any team being able to win regularly if they shoot 2 for 15 from three haha
