Student turnout is apalling

Like I said in the other thread....Generation of instant gratification but they want a couple NCAA tourney RUNS then they'll show up to games. What are you guys 19 going on 90?

The excuses are amazing.

Adults have Hoiberg to cling to for hope for MBB and they aren't just wasting time like with McDermott.

What do students have? Crappy basketball. No recent success. Not beating anyone with a pulse. Winning = excitement. I'm sure it's completely ironic that all the great student sections (Orange Krush, Cameron Crazies, Izzone, Kennel Club, etc.) have great basketball programs. Agree? Hell, even Missouri has had a great season and their students were pathetic the other night. 1 for your last 25 or whatever against ranked teams at home is not how you endear yourself to students.

We have not had crappy b-ball in 2012, we have had recent success, we are beating teams with and without a pulse, and we are winning games. If it takes the students 1-2 years to get excited about what is going on right now, then we have pathetic students.

Here is your fate students, this is Duke selling unused student tickets.

As has been said about 40 times in this thread, keep winning. There is no excitement for Iowa State MBB on campus. Why? Because we've been awful for the past 6 years. Get a couple NCAA tournament runs put together and Iowa State regains a basketball school reputation.

And I don't know where you've been but this turnout is better than most of the turnout during McDermott's last 2 years.

I'm going to have to call BS on this. If there is no excitement for MBB this year I don't know what's wrong with the students. Seriously, there should be MORE excitement this year than there would be if they were used to going to the NCAA tourney. These late season games actually matter and they matter a lot.

I have no clue why the students didn't show up but I think it is stupid. You've been waiting for YEARS to see meaningful Cyclone Basketball. Do not waste it.

So the two quality wins in Hilton (Kansas and Kansas State) are just magically going to make people forget about the McDermott era and last year's crappy basketball? Ha, what color is the sky in your world? It going to take 2-3 years of new student blood before the student section recovers unless there comes a day Iowa State doesn't lose in Hilton Coliseum no matter who the opponent is.

Which won't happen here. Too much money for JP to lose.

The die hards aren't the ones you have to worry about. They're already there. The fringe fans have no reason to go. Basketball stunk when they held tickets as freshman and sophomores and the cost wasn't worth it anymore. You conveniently forget the fringe fan doesn't spend hours on a message board reading about hype. They don't know who the recruits coming in are. They go to games when everyone asks "Iowa game, you going? Kansas game, you going?"

You are only continuing to make our students sound/look pathetic. Why are students so much different then the alums/general public? I'm only 5 years removed from being a student, and I wouldn't miss a game this season for anything! Guess what? I also sat through just about every game of the McDermott era! I would imagine anyone in this thread calling the students out also sat through most the McDermott era and are currently jacked about the team this season.

So why am I so much different then the students? Because I'm 5-10 years older?

The activity fee has/will always be there, in whatever name they choose to call it. That was put on my u bill when I was there and believe it was 30-35 instead. That was early 90s. That amount can't be included in the seat amount, IMO.

I do think they need to separate football and basketball tickets, if they are coupled like others have said.

I don't think your dumb, but you are starting to sound like an idiot. What do you call this year? If you had said all this as a reason for not buying a ticket this fall, fine, legitimate argument. But if you are sitting at home, not using a ticket you already bought and THIS is your best reason for not going, that is pathetic.

They probably just don't enjoy basketball like you. That hardly makes them pathetic.

I'm gonna bet your laziness is less than a college student and I'm also going to bet you have more free time than the majority of students who don't really understand priorities. I'm also going to guess since you're on Cyclone "Fanatic" that you aren't just a casual fan. That's what Iowa State needs. The die hards are in Hilton.

It absolutely can be included. JP needs to be able to sell to President Leath that the fee should stay because a good chunk of students have the chance to use it. It would be very easy to look at Jamie and say, "Why are we charging students money when we're turning away a large number of them because of the lack of available tickets for them?"

This year? Bad loss to UNI to start the year. We've got 2 quality wins in Hilton Coliseum (Kansas and Kansas State). The die hards are still there, but what incentive does someone who just casually follows Iowa State have to attend games? The most exciting thing to happen in Hilton during this generation of college students is beating Kansas this year. That's a great way to keep your freshman and sophomores around but you need them to keep tickets as upperclassmen instead of the freshman of 08 and 09 giving up tickets because the basketball stunk.

Fine, but then let's not get any complaints if JP takes away seats. Students don't want to go, fine. There are plenty of alumni and other ISU fans that will gobble up those seats, pay more money for them, go to the games, and buy concessions. If students were using the tickets, I wouldn't advocate it because college athletics should be for the students first. Clearly that isn't the case at ISU though, sad as that is.

Can't disagree with that. Getting people in the seats improves the experience for all who attend.

I guess I can empathize with the students though. I'm a way bigger ISU basketball fan now than I was when I was a student, and I was a student during the golden years of Tinsley and Fizer. The point being, sometimes students just don't care all that much. They're more worried about studying and partying, and sitting in Cyclone alley doing scripted cheers is really not at all appealing tbh.

I was turned down for the basketball lottery twice while I was there and still had to pay it. So what would be the difference. Plus the activity fee includes other things than bb or fb, so it won't go just because some get turned away from bb.

The bolded is flat out false, which is why it hasn't been done yet. JP isn't going to do that unless it's absolutely the last resort. At $330/seat, he can't afford to do so. He has to keep leverage or the million dollars from student fees is going to go away (and the administration at the University already hates it).

Well this is the same set of students that had to be replaced by other college's students in order to fill the student section in what became the biggest win in Iowa State history.

How does JP lose money selling the same seat twice?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that sounds like he'd be MAKING money.

I need to find the Powerpoint from earlier this year but the difference now is tuition is outrageous. The higher ups are trying to find ways to cut down on wasted money and one of the biggest complains is the $45 fee for every student that goes to the Athletics Department. The majority of the fee goes to the AD and most students don't actually use it. Geoffroy held out on them and said it wasn't going anywhere and I'm fairly sure Leath will do the same but it'll be one of the first things on the chopping block if other admins get their way.

Yes we have sucked for the past 4-5 years, but we don't this year, and its some of the worst turnout I have ever seen from students in 10 years. The last 3 games have been downright embarrassing, and the excuses that some of you come up with are pathetic. Guess what, just about all of us were once students at ISU, so we know what its like to have homework/tests/deadlines, it not like the average student workload has become more strenuous over the past 10 years.

I speak only from my experiences, as I was in school for 2 years w/o Cyclone Alley, 1 year where it was 1/2 and 1/2 and 2 years where it was both sides. My first two season as a student were some of the most energetic students sections I have witnessed, and it has gone down hill ever since. I understand that style of play and the product on the court has also attributed to that, but this years team is one of the best ones I have had season tickets for, and the support the student section is giving them is a joke. I dont know how to fix it, but something needs to be done.

I sit almost right next to the upper deck student section, and this is the first one in my 5 seasons up there that there have been students in the upper deck.

I'm not embarrassed at all by the last 3. Best student attendance we've had in years this season.
