Student turnout is apalling

Student tickets for Bball were sold out before I could buy them this year. I attend the odd game now and then, but I watch most from home now. I noticed that the attendance was lacking as well. I can't comment for other students and majors but as a senior right before spring break is when my work load is starting to ratchet up. I probably would have attended the game tonight if I had tickets but I'm not about to go pay face value to watch TTech when I can watch it at home while doing my work, lol.

when I had season tickets during the McDormant years I had 3 upper deck tickets I paid around 750 dollars for. I would pay that in a heartbeat for a behind the basket seat lower level. To me student section should be the bottom 3 rows around the floor on a first come first serve basis.
The student section was sad, it was as bad as I've seen it for a conferance game. And I for one believe that paying $250 per seat would mean more to the program than standing all game. How much are cyclone alley seats anyway?

I live for basketball season, but its not like football where everyone goes to get drunk whether they like watching the game or not. Plus, you lose a lot of fans when you have 18 home games a year. Football you only get six so if you get tickets you better go.

Are you kidding me!! Don't forget what the **** college athletics are for.... college students.

I was performing in the ISU Jazz Band concert tonight. I had to find a sub, though, because I'm in the pep band.

I agree, but there is no question that the student section is at least twice as involved in the game as the rest of the fans. The only time the other sections stand is during huge runs and the fight song during timeouts. I don't think there is a whole lot of energy from someone who is sitting down for the most part. There are some fans who might shout at players or refs while sitting, but the trend in general has to be that people who stand are louder. Just my opinion.

Fill up the student section and it's four times as involved.

:twitcy: LOL, I shoulda told Jamie Pollard tonight when I spoke with him that he should check this site out after the game. Actually i'm sure it's the first thing he does every morning as he drinks his coffee...

We start winning and all of a sudden LOTS of people jump on the bandwagon. The overall balcony hasn't been great except for big 12 play.

Good lord, the team is winning and we are complaining?! WOW

Yada Yada Yada I got a message from Mediacom when I posted on here about them, it doesn't have to be Jaime, but when you see him, let him know. :jimlad: The number one fans site for Cyclones is obviously going to be read by those connected to ISU athletics. Obviously the stadium is going to be more full for conference. Not a lot came to Hilton in the early season in terms of talented opponent or fans of either type. I just love the atmosphere of a full arena.

Can we implement a system to ban anyone who starts a thread ******** about student attendance at basketball games? These threads are getting seriously annoying when there is one after every game.

the more attention brought to this the better chances of a change. IMO, the student support and a fuller louder Hilton is crucial to our bb program. I'm sure the Athletic Department monitors this site, and maybe there is enough attention brought up on here to get them to looking at changing the system. I am not for reducing student seating, but they need to come up with a system that makes it easier for students to transfer tickets. The students that are there do a good job. As for the other non student sections? Goodness what has happened to Hilton? Some people won't get off their dead @ss and make any noise no matter what.

People will always find something to complain about. Whether it's Allen's shot selection, Royce's FTs, Freddy's inexperience in coaching, or whether Hilton Magic is back. As the team keeps winning it is hard to complain about these and easier to complain about things like CA or attendance. When Hilton starts to fill up with students and other fans in the coming years, people will complain about ticket prices, concessions, older fans not cheering loud enough, students arguing for a larger student section, non-student attendance.

What I am trying to say that if student attendance is the main thing we are complaining about now, is that really such a bad thing? Yeah it sucks there weren't as many students as there could have been. There are probably numerous changes that could occur but as others have pointed out there isn't much that could be done at this point.

I think it is pretty easy for people outside of college to target students because they perceive them as not having much responsibility ie no kids or a full time job. I didn't see any student start a thread about calling out other fans. Why? Probably because they knew student attendance wasn't great either and students would assume most of the other fans had some other responsibility that takes precedent over ISU athletics like watching their kids. Students are in college to learn and earn a degree. If some students decide to miss a game for studying or doing homework that is their prerogative. I don't think the student on here who didn't go to the game need to explain themselves.

Isn't this the same reason people have for re-entry for football games, but thee same people in this thread say they don't care what it looks like on TV because it is there ticket and they will do what they want with it. Everybody gives reasons that they want to do this or that during that time, but it sounds like students aren't allowed to have lives outside of ISU sports. We should just sleep and have class inside Hilton so the reason we are in Ames doesn't get in the way of supporting the Cyclones.

PS: My roommate and I have both been to or had somebody take our place for every men's or women's games and I can say that I noticed tons of empty seats tonight by non-student sections.

The difference being most of the people who go out at halftime of football games A) were actually at the stadium to start the game and B) get back into the game shortly after the start of the 2nd half. The only time it looks bad is the initial kick-off and possession.

Again, the problem is that there are tons of unused tickets that we can't find a home for due to the way things are structured. We don't really have that trouble in football.

There's already been students in this thread who were unable to get tickets because they sold out that fast, and they want to go, but its hard for them to get the unused tickets from other students. That's a problem.

My only defense of them is that we have sucked for their entire student career. I imagine buzz on campus was extremely low, and quite frankly, it's hasn't been much fun watching this team the last 5 years. This year it's bad that they are not there, but it's not a habit for them and it's probably off the radar.

But yes, they need to lose some seats if this continues next year. I'd much rather have the admin figure out a way to fix the ticket situation and encourage students to go. They add a lot to the atmosphere.

I'm with Al on this one. Turnout is pretty bad considering what this team has to play for. It's been years since Iowa State has been relevant. Disappointing that the students aren't more excited about this team.

No doubt about it. 6-7 years since the last decent team and the students are as far behind the curve as anyone. Thanks a million to the ones who did show up and have been showing up.

I'd love to see some kind of push by the AD to have all the student seats filled for the Baylor game. It's going to be a big game, and its on a saturday that doesn't overlap w/Spring Break or anything like that. They need to find a way to get butts in those seats. Maybe make a "pick up" system and resell the rest to the public, or just flood the students with reminders that they should go if they have tickets, or sell their tickets to someone who wants to go.

Does Royce have a free hour or two next week to just hang around central campus glaring at students and intimidating them into showing up?

Well let's see here:

29,000 students x $45 activity fee that goes to the AD = $1,305,000
7,000 football season tickets = $875,000
3,500 basketball season ticket = $437,500

That's $2,617,500 in revenue. I'll make the assumption that there are 1,000 people who have basketball tickets who don't have football tickets so about 8,000 unique ticket holders. That rings you up to $327.19/seat. And in basketball, that doesn't get you all of the home games.

The top number is exactly why they won't cut student seats down. Jamie can tell President Leath that $45 is fine because a lot of the student body getting some use from it and there is ample opportunity for all students to partake. Cutting student seating down makes his argument a little harder when students are getting turned away in bunches.

Yes we have sucked for the past 4-5 years, but we don't this year, and its some of the worst turnout I have ever seen from students in 10 years. The last 3 games have been downright embarrassing, and the excuses that some of you come up with are pathetic. Guess what, just about all of us were once students at ISU, so we know what its like to have homework/tests/deadlines, it not like the average student workload has become more strenuous over the past 10 years.

I speak only from my experiences, as I was in school for 2 years w/o Cyclone Alley, 1 year where it was 1/2 and 1/2 and 2 years where it was both sides. My first two season as a student were some of the most energetic students sections I have witnessed, and it has gone down hill ever since. I understand that style of play and the product on the court has also attributed to that, but this years team is one of the best ones I have had season tickets for, and the support the student section is giving them is a joke. I dont know how to fix it, but something needs to be done.

As has been said about 40 times in this thread, keep winning. There is no excitement for Iowa State MBB on campus. Why? Because we've been awful for the past 6 years. Get a couple NCAA tournament runs put together and Iowa State regains a basketball school reputation.

And I don't know where you've been but this turnout is better than most of the turnout during McDermott's last 2 years.

Like I said in the other thread....Generation of instant gratification but they want a couple NCAA tourney RUNS then they'll show up to games. What are you guys 19 going on 90?

The excuses are amazing.

Its pretty pathetic that you need to put together a couple of runs in the NCAA tourney to create enough buzz for the students to show up. Again, another pathetic excuse.

The student turnout over the past 3 games has not been that good, maybe better than the last few years of McDermott, but not where it should be for the level of team we have playing. This team is EXTREMELY better that any of McDermott's teams, while the student section turnout is MAYBE better, but that is most defiantly debatable.

This was an ok argument during McDermott years and even last year, but now if this all your holding onto, it's pretty damn sad. This team IS good.
This team IS entertaining. This team IS going to be in the NCAA tournament. The student tickets are sold out. It's not like you can say, "Oh, if we had known for sure we'd be good we would have bought tickets, now it's too late". You have the damn tickets! All you have to do is show up! There is AMPLE proof that this team is worth your attention.
