I’m young enough the Quinster was the first Mizzou coach I really “knew” so to speak. Based on stories from Brent and on here pretty disappointed I missed most of the Norm era
Norm, Johnny, Tubbs, were all coaches with a lot of swag, the crowds were rowdy and the coaches played right into it.

The student section was good a signs to go after certain players. Pierre Pierce comes to mind....
"DON'T LET PIERCE PENETRATE" is one that sticks in my little brain.
Think the signage became more closely reviewed after that...

They're just words. Words alone can't hurt anyone.

And ****(inson), and before that (Grady) **** is literally his name.
You are incorrect. Words matter, they always have.

We live in a society that doesn't want constraints or rules.

I would be in the camp of folks that would be in favor of banning discouraging vulgarity from the students at Hilton. Let them be more creative.

Edit: wording

@alarson, Dude, it's my opinion. You don't have to dumb everything you disagree with.

What a great day and fun atmosphere. But am I the only one that cringes when our student section chants:

F**k KU ( or whoever we’re playing ) and

You suck D**k ???

We had a 8 year old boy sitting beside us with his father and he was as uncomfortable as it gets. Is the vulgarity necessary?
I'm not sure I am in the mood to read this thread tonight, but I agree with you. Why don't you pass this on to the AD?

How do you ban it? Then you have to ban adults also? The only way any banning happens if all our big money boosters stop giving money because college students say f***. That is not gonna happen.

I guess that's another question all together. I haven't given it much thought. Will leave it to others, if it ever gets that far.

But some on here say that words are just words and don't matter, or don't have significance, is just silly. Words do matter and they always will.

Since the thread has come up, I would rather the ISU students not chant vulgarities to the opposing team or coaches. That's my opinion.

Thinking that "bad words" alone actually are harmful is whats "silly". Not one single person has ever been harmed by the usage of the word "fúck"

How words are used and the context within is how words do damage. Words in and of themselves? Not at all.

People who spend their time clutching their pearls over "bad words" by and large are the worst. There's no real such thing as a "bad word". Just bad intent.

Disagree again. There are much worse things, I'm afraid.

1. When I was in high school we chanted "b*llsh*t" at refs with little provocation. There's a reason home teams do so well. The crowd is lending its energy and being hostile to the visitors and referees. Young people want to tip the game.

2. As a parent I cringe at it now.

3. I think a big reason why I am uncomfortable isn't because I'm offended, but because I know some people will be. Most people swear I think, but not in most company. It's code switching.

As a grown ass man I don't want to swear in front of strangers, or be in a group that is.

I think the "think of the kids" is a little overblown. I didn't swear a lot as a kid, but I definitely heard it and I understood that is was something that people usually did only in close-knit settings or if they were very dumb. Kids are a lot more perceptive than parents can give them credit for.

Can’t speak for others. Just for me.

I don’t care if my kids hear curse words at sporting events. It’s happened a lot. I let them watch WWE and it has curse words. As many others have said, it’s a great teachable moment later on. I curse. Even around them. It’s not a big deal.

The origin of my own “this is probably too far” stance is if it got to the suck d*** part that was posted. That junk is plainly homophobic and shouldn’t have to be explained to a kid or justified by an adult.

How do you ban vulgarity from the students? I'm supportive of them being more creative, but I can't conceive of how to ban vulgarity without turning Cyclone Alley into Salt Company Street.

I worded that wrong. You cannot ban vulgarity from students or anyone. What I meant is that I would be in favor, since the subject has been broached, of somehow discouraging the students from using profanity in their chants and banners.

I'm not sure if this can be done or not. Maybe it is just the society we live in today. You take the good with the bad. Free speech with profanity at a basketball game.

I would not be in favor of banning it. Is there another way to discourage it?

@CyCoug, sorry to tag you in this thread but did Texas actually complain about your student section wearing hand painted tshirts that spelled horns down? TIA.

I think it's a reasonable expectation to be able to take a child to a college basketball game. But I also think it's a reasonable expectation for said parent to expect some curse words in their surrounding area as that is typical, and HAs been typical, for quite some time.

The chants have become excessive and increasingly more vulgar. It's a complete lack of class and entirely unnecessary. Oddly enough it didn't used to be this way at least not remotely close to this degree. As someone who was at the game I can say yesterday's chants were overly vulgar and excessive for a college bball game, probably tripling the number or amount I have heard at other such games.

10 seasons ago we spent the rest of the game chanting F*** McGary after that Michigan player accidentally stepped on Naz Long.

Have whatever opinion you want of it. But this is nothing new.
