Stop Playing Iowa

1) Iowa hardly compares to Oklahoma and Ohio State, correct.

2) In the Ferentz Era (1999-Present), Iowa has finished the season in the AP Top 10, five times (2002, 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2015). The 2008 Edition of the Iowa Hawkeyes (9-4) finished 20th in the AP. Hell, it's not much of a stretch to say the 2008 version of Iowa would be considered one of the best teams in the history of Iowa State Football (certainly on par with Iowa State's 1978 and 2000 teams).

Your definition of 'decent' warrants further explanation.

If you look at the Captain Kirk Era not counting this year they average 7.5 W and 5.1 L in that time. In my mind that is "decent" yeah they have years where they finish in the top 10, but then they fall off and win 6, or 7, or even 4 in a year. Would I love to have that success at Iowa state? Heck yes and I'm sure most would agree with me on that. I'm not one that cheers for the hawks so take it how you will. Look at last year 12-2, but got embarrassed at the rose bowl. Were they the 8th best team in the nation ? Not in my opinion, but you play the schedule you are dealt and in the BIG west its a breeze.

I like a good dig at Iowa's expense as much as the next guy, but you do realize Iowa was about 6 inches away from the playoffs last year right? I think I speak for most of the board here when i say, stop trying.

That's not pretend like a) the ISU game affects there chances of making the CFP, if anything it greatly helps it and b) that this is going to be a regular occurrence. Iowa hit the jackpot last year in terms of winning some close games and having one of the weakest P5 schedules of all time

You guys are all missing the point. Without a home game sellout with Iowa and UNI, alternating every other year of course, the Iowa State athletic department would not be able to function. We are financially dependent on those games. I for one would rather ISU be able to make payroll and debt payments on the SEZ than schedule a 3 year contract to play Wartberg.

Now you may choose to not live in reality, or even reject it and substitute your own, but it doesnt make it any less true.

It's funny to me that ISU fans are quick to say "UNI is a a no-win situation. Drop that game!" But when Iowa fans bring up that Iowa/ISU is similar for Iowa, "that's not the same thing!" It's a very similar situation. Go back and look at this very message board before the Iowa game - there were a bunch of comments like "Don't worry about Saturday - if we win it's awesome, if we lose, it doesn't matter because we were expected to."

ISU gets nothing out of beating UNI, because they'll always be favored to beat UNI, but if they lose, it's an embarrassment to ISU football. Same exact situation with Iowa/ISU - Iowa has been favored in every game since 2001 I think, most of the time by a TD+. A win is expected, a loss is embarrassing. If ISU was a consistent bowl type football program, that argument wouldn't hold water, but considering ISU's historical football success, it's a no-win situation for Iowa, whether ISU fans like it or not.

I don't think this game should ever be dropped permanently, but I do think it needs to rotate every other year now that the B1G has 9 conference games and Iowa can't schedule a 2nd P5 OOC. Rotating every other year helps ISU too for the reasons elaborated in this thread. Since Kirk got the program back on track, the average Iowa win has been 30-11 in this game.

Essentially, the only time ISU wins this is when Iowa has a bad QB (Jake C, Vandenberg, or Jake R), are green/bad at the LOS (05), or just have a bad team (2012 - Kirk's only losing regular season). If none of those conditions exist, Iowa wins relatively comfortably - with the exception of 02, and that was just the best QB in ISU football history winning that game for Iowa State, you won't find Seneca Wallace wins very often.

ISU/Iowa is a fun rivalry, don't want it to go away forever, but Iowa needs to schedule games that help with the program's image nationally to help recruiting - scheduling ISU every year doesn't help with that.

Are you dumb? We aren't financially dependent on UNI.

This thread got trollarific in a hurry.

To the OP, I feel you brother but the convenience and beatability of UI means they'll be on the schedule for a long time.

I am really glad I listened to to EDSBS's podcast before the game.

I really wish Iowa Fans knew what the nation and media thought of them.

I feel really bad for Hawkeye fans, because they are going to get their hopes up again about being better than they are, and then get all pissed about the lack of respect, and then get boat raced by a real team.

While I don't agree with the woe are we, can't win unless we play cupcakes sentiment of the OP. I do agree that it is ridiculous to play two in-state games against quality opposition. Iowa is always a solid program, but the rivalry is too good to abandon. UNI is consistently a top 10-15 FCS team. They should never, ever be on our schedule. ISU should not schedule FCS teams that legitimately believes they can compete against the lower half of FBS; let alone an in-state one. Sure we should always beat UNI, but why take the gamble?

The problem is, when Iowa plays these games, they get destroyed. However, dont let that get in the way of thinking Iowa is a national power...
