Stop Playing Iowa

I get this and all, but does anyone else see the problem of celebrating being nearly .500 aganst a team?

And Iowa State isn't anywhere close to .500 against Iowa overall.

Iowa State has been really good at pulling out some close wins in ugly games in recent years. The probability of winning almost all of those close games in future years going forward is very very unlikely. Iowa starts pulling out some of those close ugly wins and the series is going to flip (again) dramatically in their favor.

I think it would be beneficial for both schools to play each other every 3-4 years.

They have a lot more to lose than we do by losing the game.

Wouldn't bother me if we quit playing Iowa (although it and KU are our best series lately) but I think what MC should do is focus on the B12 North. TCB against KU, KSU and WVU and we'll be in good shape. But if not Iowa I think it's gotta be SOME P5 team in that slot just for the profile of the program.

They have a lot to lose playing most of their games because they play so many bad teams.

We are the worse one probably. I don't know if we would beat Northwestern or Rutgers at this point.

According to Sagarin we're better than Rutgers and Miami of Ohio. Iowa should drop those two games too. Might as well throw in Purdue since they have a lot more to lose in that game as well

I'm totally for axing the UNI game but Iowa is a fellow P5 school. We don't really lose anything other than maybe bowl eligibility by playing them. The difference with UNI is that they are really two levels below us in football. It looks awful if we lose to them from the outside even if they are actually good. That isn't the case when it comes to Iowa.

That's the exact point.

On 1 poll-and you're not better than Miami of Ohio

So what polls did Iowa drop in? I saw the meaningless coaches won where they were ranked too high to begin with but I'm curious the other ones you are referencing

I'm guessing aside from ku that Iowa is our best winning % in recent history. I have a hard time agreeing with those who are scared to play a team were routinely pretty competitive with. It's the same with the hawk fans who claim it's a lose-lose game for them, they're just making up excuses so they don't have to admit they can't handle losing to a rival.

It has nothing to do with them being a rival. At best, we can probably hope to have a .500 record with them over the long haul. I want to get all of our noncon opponents up to 90%. I want to go 3-0 or 4-0 in the noncon every year possible.

I think this is more of a drop UNI issue than a drop Iowa issue. I love the Iowa/Iowa State game, and generally I think it's a game we have a good chance to win. However, with an already tough conference schedule, and with Iowa on the schedule every year, our other two games need to be against the worst-of-the-worst. I'm not suggesting we shouldn't be able to easily beat UNI, we should, but it never seems to work out that way.

Honestly, the last game I can remember coming in to feeling absolutely convinced we would win was Western Illinois in 2012, and maybe a Kansas game here and there. We need more Western Illinois games.
According to Sagarin, Iowa State vs. Western Illinois is a toss-up on a neutral field. :(

Iowa is not Oklahoma or Ohio State or even many of the SEC teams. They are average and once every 10 years they will have a decent team. It is about our only rival left so we will continue to play them. There is no reason for that outcome to happen like it did Saturday, but CMC has a lot of work ahead the next few years to build a team to compete every week.

1) Iowa hardly compares to Oklahoma and Ohio State, correct.

2) In the Ferentz Era (1999-Present), Iowa has finished the season in the AP Top 10, five times (2002, 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2015). The 2008 Edition of the Iowa Hawkeyes (9-4) finished 20th in the AP. Hell, it's not much of a stretch to say the 2008 version of Iowa would be considered one of the best teams in the history of Iowa State Football (certainly on par with Iowa State's 1978 and 2000 teams).

Your definition of 'decent' warrants further explanation.

Ferentz has been at Iowa for 18 years and has 6 top 25 finishes. Iowa was pretty good in the 2000's though

Iowa States best shot at improving is scheduling 3 wins during non conference, there's no debating that. But Iowa State doesn't want to win.

I agree but you could argue we already do. I think going forward conferences not named SEC are going to want members to have at least one P5 OOC game.

Noted. Since this thread is about whether or not to play Iowa and the vast majority here want to do it you can GTFO now. This isn't ISR.

We for sure need to stop scheduling schools like UNI and North Dakota. I'm sure Appalachian State will be next though, while every other Big12 school continues to schedule much easier FCS schools.
