My husband hates the fair. More than hating the fair, he hates the constant coverage by the local TV stations during the fair. We actually stopped watching the news a few years ago because of the constant coverage.

I used to enjoy the fair as a kid (and I didn't know there was a midway until I was in college), but now - especially if I have to bring my husband, I've learned to dislike it for the most part. My company even gives us free tickets to the fair and I wasn't even planning on going this year. If I do go, I try to not take my husband, and then after getting a turkey leg, carmel apple, dippin' dots and an ISU FB poster (if available), I'm ready to go home.

I dont understand it. Once you have been there once, you have seen it all. Once you have seen a fat cow or bull you have seen it, once you have seen some butter sculpture you have seen it.

I dont really understand the people who would want to put themselves through the missery of going to that godforsaken thing more than once a year let alone multiple times the same year. Besides not understanding why anyone wants to go multiple times, I dont understand how anyone can afford to go more than once. You have to be a freaking millionaire, it will likely cost me and my family $150 just to go one day, let alone multiple days.

If the state fair went away (and i wish it would) I wouldn't notice one bit. Its probably the most overrated experience known to man. Oooh look pork chops on a stick.....wait they are $7.50 apiece and it would take 3 of them to satisfy me, no thanks I will go with another $8 beer. Words cant explain the hatred I have for that ****hole.

I won't go that far but I will say that I hate the Fair as well. It is hotter then hell, crowded, and I get bored in about 5 minutes. I was born and raised in Iowa but I have never stepped foot on a farm so the animals, farm equipment, etc... doesn't do much for me. $8 for a beer is absolutely stupid... who is running the beer tent? The people from Wells Fargo Arena?

That being said I think there are alot of people that go to the Fair and enjoy it and that is a good thing. Just because I don't enjoy it at all shouldn't keep others from going and enjoying it so I would never want them to stop having it. It simply isn't my thing and I am ok with that.

How do you not love a good corn dog, an ice cold beer, and watching the people. Good times had by all. They should have a website like People of Walmart for the Iowa State Fair. You might just get better pictures.

Never actually been to the Iowa State Fair. Do go to The Great Minnesota Get-Together, though.

It's too much of a zoo, I don't like that we live in an agricultural state and so many people haven't seen sheep or cattle before. I personally like the South Dakota State Fair. It helps that I show sheep their but it isn't as packed and it just has a nice feeling to it.

I'm in the dont care camp. I can take it or leave it. I usually make it once a year. I do kind of enjoy East Side night for obvoius people watching reasons.

I grew up on a farm so seeing the animals doesnt do much for me. The equipment displays from my experience pale in comparison to the Farm Progress Show or the Power Show in WF arena.

If I go I do HAVE to have a Turkey Leg and as many of them there $8 beers as I can pour down my word hole.

I'm kind of a fair freak! We camp at the fair. Our spot has been in the family for about 25 years. And now the person directly behind us quit coming, so the signed their name off to my sister. We turned our camper around and now we have a huge spot! I've gone every year since I was born. Can't wait! Going up Friday staying til Sunday. Probably go up everyday after work next week, then going up Friday and staying til the end. Sometimes I just hang out at the camper with a beer and relax. Don't go down to the fair everyday.

Been a couple times since moving to Iowa and I don't see the appeal. I've always assumed it has to do with not going as a kid so I don't have the nostalgia factor at play.

when was younger, we used to show purebred shorthorns(beef type) and milking shorthorns. that was lot of work, but it was fun.we used to hit ak-sar-ben and the international livestock show,too----- a great way for a young 4-her or ffa guy or gal to learn about agriculture.

Yes, you are right. The prices are getting out of hand. We usually get a few fair foods, but we grill everynight at the camper and just have sandwiches for lunch at the camper. I am pretty ****** this year though. The camp grounds has it's own parking lot for friends and family. Each camper gets two passes to park in there. But this year IT'S TEN FREAKING DOLLARS A NIGHT TO PARK THERE!!! Up from $6 last year. I will definitely be doing some b*******!

There it is! As an Eastsider, I go to the Fair on the first Friday...every year. If you haven't been on the first Friday, hanging out at The Depot or Bud Tent until closing, well...you just haven't lived.

For the record, I voted "Love it" and only because of this one day. Can't wait for tomorrow night. If you're going to be there, you have two options...bring the boxing gloves, or just stand back and enjoy the show.

I voted don't care, but I like going but I can skip years in between going. Especially after getting a week of state fair-like crowds on RAGBRAI. Of course without the wife-beaters and mullets.

Hey, you must not have fully experienced some of the towns like I did on this years ride. I saw more than my fill of these in several towns.
