Also no coach always makes the right choices. There are always times when a starter gets hurt and the backup ends up being better.

True. At the same time just because a backup comes in and is or appears to be better it doesn't always mean that the coach made the wrong choice initially. There can be growth in a player sitting on the bench. Also a player may be more successful against some opponents' style of play than he would be against others.

I have started to think the starter will be SJ but I have nothing against JB and would be fine if he was named the starter.

I really want whoever starts to prove that he is the undeniable starter in the first game to put an end to the debate.

If it were only that easy. As soon as the starter throws a pick, fumbles, makes the wrong read, throws a bad pass, gets a penalty or burns a timeout the debate will arise again. I fully expect to continue to hear the uninformed call from the stands for Coach to put Tiller in at QB.

I would say that for varying reasons, I'd be happy with any of the QBs being the starter. I THINK that Jantz will be.

Jantz has a better deep ball and therefore can stretch defenses better. Assuming he has improved in operating the zone read (he was really poor at it last year, in my very uninformed opinion), I think he gives us the best chance to have a GREAT year. However, if his decision making hasn't improved, it could lead to a disastrous year.

Barnett operates the offense extremely well, but lacks a bit in the passing game, especially the deep ball. I think he would be a more consistent performer, and may have the best odds of getting us to a bowl game, but the ceiling for the team may be lower than it would be with Jantz.

Richardson is an unknown for most of us, so I can't comment on his strengths and weaknesses. Mainly, I'd just be encouraged by the fact that he played well enough in camp to earn the starting nod over two QBs with experience that both had good wins last year.

To sum it up, my feelings are that Jantz gives us the best chance for a breakout year, Barnett gives us the best chance for a bowl, and Richardson would give me hope that we MAY have found a "franchise" (for lack of a better word) QB to build the team around.

Yeah I am really hoping that we can stomp Tulsa and our QB throws 3 TDs, 300 yards, and has a 70% completion rate. Not sure how likely this is to happen but I can hope for right now.

IMO JB's type of mistakes are more correctable so I hope he wins the job. To me the idea that Jantz has bigger play ability doesn't mean much since none of those throws ever take place from the pocket. Defenses can easily bracket him in & force him to play from the pocket....then what does he have left?

Lol why do you think Jantz wouldn't be able to throw from the pocket if he had protection?

It's interesting that the 6' 1" 200 lbs, running, less of a passing QB could throw from the pocket even when the OL was rotating about 7-10 lineman due to injuries. Since 9 of our 12 games are conference games, I will add a question to the poll...can you name the QB on the roster that has won games in the Big 12 conference?

I can even name the WR who won Big 12 games playing QB.

A better question might be whether we have a starter that can live up to at least the minimum expectations of the coaching staff? What we know as of today is that both fell well below that bar last year.

Experience alone should help both quarterbacks, but they both need to make big steps forward to achieve what the coaches expect from their quarterbacks. I'm looking forward to seeing what a new position coach and coordinator can do for their growth. I have a feeling that regardless of who is named the starter we will see both play this season.

If Jantz can stop throwing picks, he will be the starter all year.

Which is why Rhoads will give Jantz a chance to prove himself. Listen, he's the senior. Rhoads is obviously giving him every chance in the book. I think Jantz gets the nod, but will be on a short leash.

Why would someone have an emotional attachment to a college QB though?

In this case, I see it like this. There are people who like the Big Play potential that Steele gives ISU. We've seen it before and when it happens, it's a lot of fun. Some don't like his potential for turnovers

In the case of JB, Some like the way he seemd to run a machine like offense. There didn't seem to be the crazy whacked out play when JB was in there, along with this was less Big Play Potential, but it was the trade for a more controlled offense.

I think in these cases, it's what kind of football you like to watch. I have to admit, I havea bit of an attachment to SJ myself, if for nothing else, I like his story. I want him to reduce the streaks of turnovers he had last year that put us in huge holes because this genuinely is his last shot at football. He made the trip here to ISU and I want to see him succeed and it still gives JB 2 years to be the starter. So in a lot of ways, no one gets hurt that bad.

In the end, that Big play potential is really fun to watch in SJ and I believe a lot of other people see that as well. Honestly, if SJ doesn't get the start, I really don't feel like the coach made the wrong decision at all. I'm going to assume that SJ never got a handle on the turnover issue.

I went with "I think Jantz."

I didn't touch either of the "Want" categories.

If we could have parallel seasons with each of them starting all games, considering all aspects of the team (experience in many areas, studs at LB, potential at receiver, depth at RB, development of special teams), I would feel confident of at least 7 wins in both those mythical seasons.

I'm afraid I ended up voting this way. The latter part influenced by which side of the perpetual argument was more annoying. Some of the Jantz mafia are clearly the worst. You know who you are.

If Jantz has his boneheaded plays cleared up we might be in fair shape for the season.

Screw this annonymous poll.

I think everyone should have to declare their preseason allegiance to the QB of their choice! It should be part of your signature.

I am a card carrying member of the Jantz Mafia!

No seriously, I made cards. Does anybody want one?

I'm basing this on his play on the field. Dude is not comfortable in the pocket.

Yep, that is why he gets in trouble as he takes half the field away.

Remember when Bret Meyer always rolled right and only had todd blythe to hit going out of bounds and the defenders shoved todd out while he was still in the air?
