Should Morris Start Over Thomas?

I really think arguing whether if Morris or Thomas starts is really not cool. Who cares? I think Matt Thomas will be a great player for us in the years to come...

You can be a great player and critical to the team and not start ~ signed Tyrus McGee

Seriously, I trust the coaching staff to continuously evaluate and decide what puts us in the best position to win.

I think morris should start just to take the pressure off of Kane, they wouldnt be able to drop back as much. Plus Thomas' D is fairly poor

Thomas seems to be about one step behind the defender 9 out of 10 times. Hopefully that will improve as he gets more comfortable.

I wouldn't mind trying him off the bench (swapping he and Naz) to try him in that Tyrus role. I've said that all along. The down side is that could shake his confidence even more.

Either way, I think he'll be very solid to good next year and eventually be a great player for us.

Naz Long's defense is extremely overrated. He gets beat just as much as Thomas. Thomas averages 26 minutes per game and has committed 15 fouls this year. Long averages 20 minutes per game and has committed 22 fouls. Part of being a good defender is being able to do it without fouling. I am a fan of both but Thomas should be starting. Long has not proven he can shoot it away from Hilton. Thomas had one good game from Hilton. Long's best game away from Hilton was 8 points against George Mason.

4 guys can't keep doing everything for us. I know we're undefeated, but thinking that trend will continue while all of our scoring/rebounding/tough defense is coming from 4 players, albeit very good players, it is not formula for success. A 5th, 6th, and 7th option have to start emerging and fast. Conference play is coming. Not worried about Long, as I think he has 6th man pretty much on lockdown, and Morris is playing well but we have yet to see his offensive game blossom. Really need SDW, MT, or K.J. start really earning their minutes. The way MT is playing right now, there is no reason he should be starting. Iowa State needs to use him similar to how OSU used Phil Forte last season. Spot starting, but primarily off the bench utilizing him as instant offense every time he came in. Do that until he is comfortable because clearly right now, he is not.

Long hasn't been playing very well lately either. If you are going to take Thomas out of the lineup it has to be because somebody is clearly playing better. Long's point per game average has been dropping at about the same rate as Thomas'.

This thread is shouldn't exist. Have we not learned that Fred knows more about basketball than any of us will ever know. If Fred thinks Thomas is the best starter that is good enough for me. Also, Thomas does a lot of the little things that people don't talk about. They are both great players and it really doesn't matter who gets the start.
I'm going to end up regretting that I posted this I think, but....

Judging by how some posters here talk about how Iowa has a bunch of white guys when talking about how we're better, I wouldn't be surprised if some posters just assume Thomas isn't as good because of that. I'm not saying that is the case, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Some people think that white basketball player somehow equals inferior talent.

I think Monte will be great for us in the future, but I think he makes a lot more freshman mistakes than Thomas does as well.
Why you racist sob! Why don't you just say "you" people? :)

Is anyone else getting tired of these threads nit picking this and that on our undefeated, #14 ranked, basketball team? We all know that we are not perfect even though we are undefeated. We need to continue to improve to be ready for the Big Dance, but we seem to be splitting hairs with most of these threads. It is not like Percy is starting in front of Niang.

Next thing you know someone will be slamming Ejim because he dribbled the ball off his foot one time.

Lol if we were #1 and won a national title, there would be the people who complain that the championship is bad cuz we will have a let down the next year.

great post

I have nothing to complain about except I would like to see our reserve big men get more minutes. I am not nitpicking anything. I don't even know if I am right, and definitely don't want to question Matt Thomas playing. I think he has been doing well. I just think the more those big men play, the better off it will be for our major weakness, and that is if one of our important players gets in foul trouble, particularly, Niang, Ejim, or Hogue. We may need those big guys to win us a ballgame one of these days. Anyway, I could be wrong. I think Fred does an amazing job. Our brain trust probably has reasons for doing what they do, and I trust them. I normally think, they know stuff that I don't, and therefore I don't even voice my doubts. I hope this post hasn't been too boring.

If I recall, there actually was a thread slamming Ejim for dribbling the ball off of his foot. And it was just as ridiculous as this one is.

No kidding. I would think if we learned anything from 2002-2010, we learned that we should enjoy the wins.

The other thing that is killing me lately is this stupid idea that the bad starts are going to come back to bite us at some point. Well, no ****. Yes, at some point this season, Iowa State is going to lose. But I think that I would be more concerned with some slow starts if those hadn't come (for the most part) against good teams or on the road or after 2 games in 3 days. I would also be more concerned if the slow starts appeared to be do to lack of effort. But I don't think they are.

The losses are going to come at some point. Get prepared.

none of the teams we started bad against are big 12 caliber teams, and not even close to the good teams in the big 12. there will be games that if we start like that. the team we are playing will actually be good and we will have very little chance to come back. im not to worried about it. im just pointing out the reason alot of people dont consider it a "stupid idea". pretty much all of the teams we have played this year have looked like crap after we have played them so far. includeing the big wins michigan and BYU. there should be atleast alittle worry. but its fun while its lasting.
