Royce White in Ames today

today could be a huge step for us in 2011 just saying...look at the talent that we could have on that team...damn

perhaps baylor knows something you don't? maybe they have done more then just read the message boards on this subject? i honestly don't know but if what you're saying is true, i seriously doubt he is in such poor academic standing.

He is in poor academic standing because he dropped out of school midway through spring semester. He did well gradewise in the fall (around a 3.00 or higher) but has no credits from spring, and from what I can tell, is not enrolled in summer school to attempt to make up the credits. That is where the academic issues arise from.

Make no mistake, Royce is an intelligent kid. He has very little guidance in life and because of that has made awful decisions and is suffereing the consequences from them. He is athletic and charismatic, and those two qualities have gotten him this far. He is just finding that those two characteristics only take you so far when your decision making ability is poor.

From everything I read and understand about the situation, he would have to sit out an entire year before he is eligible. This seems to be due to the transfer rule and due to dropping out of school this spring.

If he goes to Kentucky he is going to be competing with a bunch of one and done freshmen. That would get annoying. Here he could be getting very quality minutes with a mix of talented freshmen and some good soph./junior/senior players. I like the latter:wink:.

I think ISU has a lot to offer White. The new practice facility can compete with those others. Ames is just 2 1/2 hours down the interstate for him which seems to be important. And no other coach in the nation has more NBA GM's on speed dial than coach H, remember. Also Kentucky is absolutley loaded with NBA talent. Would he really want to compete for playing time when he could come to Ames and be the man right away?

And as a parent...if my kid got into the trouble he got into, the last thing I'd want would be to ship him off so far away. Ames offers a way that parents can more easily stay more plugged in.

Baylor, yes, we definitely have better facilities. Kentucky? We don't TOUCH Rupp Arena.

Yeah, cuz you can give a good endorsement to a kid you kicked off the team.

Johnny did it for Sam Mack back in the day. Wesley wasn't kicked off but I doubt he and Mac will ever be exchanging Christmas cards, yet it sounds like Mac's endorsement of him was one of the main reasons Boeheim took him. It probably happens more often than we know.

Our chances always greatly improve when he get a potential athlete on campus. ISU has a beautiful campus (especially this time of year), practice facility, and arena. A face to face visit with Coach Hoiberg and TJ will go a long ways. I like our chances much better today knowing that he is visiting.

Agree!
Thank god for that practice facility eh?!
Thank you, again, Pollard.

Not disagreeing but I'm curious how involved the 'parents' actually are? What's his family/home life like? How plugged in were they originally?

My guess is part of his issue is lack of a significant adult figurehead pointing him in the right direction & guiding him in the things parental units normally would do...but I'm just guessing.

when you are in Iowa State's situation and you have a chance to get a player like Royce White, you jump on that opportunity. Short leash if you need to, but you don't turn it down.

As far as getting a kid into Baylor? Are you kidding me? There are doorknobs with higher IQ's than most of Baylor's basketball team.

People say that if he gets into trouble, no big deal, he is gone - low risk. What if he leads some of our younger more impressionable recruits down a bad road as well? Still low risk?

I am still concerned that the program will rue the day that he joined the program if he does. However, if he does come, I desperately hope I am wrong.

That would be one heaping plate of crow I would relish eating...

You must have forgotten - WE ARE IOWA STATE :wideeyed:

I just don't understand this attitude (if you are being sarcastic then I apologize). by working hard and hustling your butt off you create your own luck and your own breaks. When you sit back and let life (or the course of a game) happen to you, you will not get the "breaks."

With the staffs we have in place (CPR, Mayor FH, BF, et al) the attitude has started to, and will change.

Gentlemen and ladies, we make our own destiny and our own luck. Reference NU vs ISU for more details. Talent is great but, heart, hustle, and never say die attitudes are far more important.

I'll just say this. There's gotta be something more to it (and no, not something 'shady'), because what I've been told, and I truly trust me sources, is that these schools are fighting for him because he'll be able to play at some point next season.

I've also heard this so you aren't the only one.

I think Royce is low risk high reward. If he still has issues, he's kicked off the team and we all move on. FH cuts his losses, no biggie. If Royce turns it around and plays like he can, we win games, Royce goes to the NBA, and FH's recruiting/coaching cred skyrockets.

The only question with that is, can we afford the APR hit if he does cut his losses? Its not just about losing White after a year, its about potentially losing a scholarship for future years.

I say go for it, though.
