Rhoads's Recruiting

Alright everyone, go tell the 12 first year starters and numerous very you g players that after 2 games, they should be better than teams of the past that had 2-3 year starters. I think people are forgetting that knott and Klein were not wrecking crews their first year on the field. I conceded the line is not playing good and that to me is a combination of talent/coaching, but the rest of the team that is looking bad are inexperienced or just trying to make something put of terrible play calls

I am still very excited to see this team grow. You can tell the athleticism is there with this team, they just need to understand how our coaches want them to play the game. (Other than Mess)

Please. In 2009, we won at Nebraska, and looked halfway decent in a bowl game (and won!). In 2010, we handily beat Northern Ill, totally shut down UNI, won at Texas, and scored 52 points in beating TTech. We couldn't any of those things now. We've looked terrible in our last two bowls. CPR inherited more talent than he has accumulated since.

Such delicious delusion. Maybe if every game, the opposing team can turn the ball over 8 times, we can win again. UNI, we had two defensive TDs so our offense still sucked. And the bowl game was against terrible Minnesota team. They played bad in that too. You point is silly.

That's the point though, isn't it? Isn't class balance a function of recruiting? Why do some other programs reload when we just rebuild?

We have more depth mow than ever before. Our players are stronger and faster than ever before. Every team has periods when they are yoing and inexperience. I listened to first part of aTm and Bama on radio yesterday and they were talking about how young the Aggies were on defense. It happens.

Coaching, however, is the issue. Wally has taken this bunch and coached them up. Our D played signifcantly better from week 1 to week 2. Our O looks completely lost. The difference? Coaching.

Uh, Northern Illinois in 2010 finished 11-3, and we handed them their worst loss of the three. They slaughtered Fresno State in their bowl game. CPR and staff beat this team with his "inherited" players. But keep ripping on Mess, yeah, that's it, that the only problem...

That is our problem. A few bad recruiting classes. I do think last year's was an improvement at least.

Completely agree, and If Rhoads doesn't address the playcalling in a big way, not sure we compete with anyone that doesn't have a terrible defense.

So one solid game. Weird, I remember CPR had an amazing game against a good Baylor team and a top ranked KSU game last year.
Your argument is still dumb

Agree. I wish people would stop pointing to that win at Neb like it was some awesome performance. It was a complete fluke win, and under the same circumstances, NU wins that game 99 times out of 100.

2010 Texas was not a good team, but at least we stomped them for 3 quarters. That was a solid win.

Bottom line is that Pollard is going to have a tough time justifying keeping CPR if we are not bowling in 2015. 2-10 this year or whatever, 4-5 wins next year maybe?. If he isn't bowling in 2015 what choice does ISU have? We can't pay people 2million a year to be motivational speakers.

I definitely agree with this and there's nothing anyone other than maybe Bama and 5-10 other programs can do about it.

However, when you recruit poorly, the years where you're young can result in disastrous 1-2 win seasons. If 6-7 wins is our ceiling, when we're experienced and mature, then our downside is going to be pretty ugly when we're young.

Granted, it's far better than the 80's and 90's, but it's depressing none the less that we took our best shot and got 6 wins last year, and now we're back to "rebuilding" mode and looking at 1-3 wins.

People are blaming player development as well as recruiting, but I don't think that's the problem either. Was Quenton Bundrage this good of a player all of last year? Were Osemele, Hicks, Bykowski, and Lenz even borderline NFL players at the beginning of their careers? Right now, I think you about have to put all the blame on play calling, because I really think this staff is good at developing players, but right now we just aren't using them right.

One other thing about recruiting. How many DT have we recruited with the present coaches???? Converting DE to DT comes at a price. That price comes like it was last night, getting run over by the run game. What good is it of having 10 running backs if we can't run the ball. Maybe we need to set a rule to try to have balanced numbers at given positions. Plus, recruiting all these 5' 7" or 5' 9" DBs. They may have speed but not close to slow Iowa receivers last night... If they were close they got out jumped. Plus, you can throw in the 200-210 lb linebackers.....

Ding....Ding....Ding....You win the Prize with that instant classic post my friend.....CPR inherited more talent...I agree...agree...agree...agree...well you get the point...

Our defense looks good though. Sure, our front seven gave up yards, but they did what they needed too for us to win. Wide receiver is the best it's been under Rhoads. O-line is frankly the only position that I think is worse than it was in year one.

Also, we needed 8 turnovers to win at Nebraska. Sure, it was a great win, but we were way undermanned that game. Watch the replay if you don't believe me. We did score 52 points vs. Tech. We also had Tom Herman calling plays and were throwing the football down field for once, something we only do this year at the end of each half.

This was also by far the best UNI team Rhoads has faced, and Northern Illinois is also better now than they were several years ago.

This is a fair point, but you must also admit that year 5 is by far his worst team and it doesn't even look close.

That 2009 Iowa team would have beaten us 59-0 last night.

I still think the defense looked solid. A couple mistakes, but they are a defense that could get us in the top half of the conference. As far as offense, our receivers are the most talented they've been. IMO, Richardson is the best QB we've had under Rhoads and our running backs our solid, as well as tight ends. Our line is bad, but it all comes back to Mess, IMO. I believe the talent is there to be our best offense yet, but poor game planning and play calling that started last season have carried over into this year.
