REPORT: Anthony Nelson flips commitment to Iowa

The talent pool is vastly larger in a state where football is religion. My cousins played in New Braunfels (where TE Alex Leslie is from) and I can tell you football is above everything else. For years the most read single newspaper in the state was the Dallas Morning News after NSD.

What I'm talking about selling out to the state of Texas. I want to let TX kids know that we intend to make ISU a Texan team inside the Iowa borders. More TX recruits, more Texan assistants, more time in Texas.

I absolutely want to keep recruiting Iowa as hard as possible but the league we're in is a Texan league. Period.

Of course the talent pool is deeper in Texas than in Iowa. They have 12x as many people. I think we should continue to recruit texas as well. Maintaining and improving a Midwest presence is integral for our establishment as a program, though. We just aren't getting the level of talent out of TX and FL to be competitive at this point.

That's not the point. Texas population is just under 26.5 million and Iowa just over 3, so you're correct it's a big difference (Texas has almost 9x as many), but Texas averages about 350 Div 1 recruits per year, while Iowa averages just under 10. That's a significant difference in the ratio compared to the population difference.

Here's a listing and some analysis of recruits by state for 2008-2013.

how many recruits do you want per year from Iowa?

Also, are you currently in high school in Iowa? I can't understand why you're so biased towards Iowa high school football.

For some of us it's an easy and obvious answer. For ME, it's fun to root for kids you have some sort of connection to outside of just college. For our Iowa kids, we'll know his high school, will have seen them play, know people that know the family... Deeper connections, deeper roots.

For me, it's fun to root for a team that wins more than 2 games per year. I DGAF where the talent comes from, but we need more/better talent.

We don't need a set number. Take them as they go.
The reality is that if we were going to bowls every year, I wouldn't be here complaining. However, it is clear that what we are doing is not working. We need to play to the few strengths we have.

What are those again?
