REPORT: Anthony Nelson flips commitment to Iowa

I'd pull the invite right away. Why let him visit for the biggest recruiting wknd for football this semester. It's clear he is going to Iowa.

I think it's more likely he flips back than he convinces someone else not to go to ISU... although both are probably unlikely.

I think Rhoads recruits the state of Iowa very hard. And he's done a really good job with it too. He stole campos away from Mizzou and locked down Lazard. It's too bad we couldn't have gotten Pierschbacher and Darboh, but I'm sure Rhoads went after them hard and there was probably very little he could have done to get them here.

The iowa guys he isn't offering aren't being offered by anyone else, are they? So it's not like he's missing a big recruit, he just can't offer a scholarship to everyone...

Campos was a nice pick up. Lazard was of course a good pick up, but someone who was destined for Ames as it was. I don't think ISU had much of a chance for Ross or Darboh, as Ross grew up an Iowa fan. I don't remember much positive talk of Darboh staying in state, there was some Notre Dame interest early on and then I think it was Michigan or bust from about late summer in his recruitment.

A couple off the top I can think of are Jewell and Boyle. Jewell played for Joel Lanning's uncle and I think we probably would have had a good shot at him, and he's now starting for Iowa as a rs freshman. Boyle's game fits our offense soooo much better than Iowa's that I have to think we may have had a shot at him if we offered, and Kirk is having quite a time keeping qb's happy lately. Not offering David Johnson was a major blunder by both Kirk and CPR, and both have paid for it.

My father coached Boyle when he was in middle school, before he moved to Des Moines. He said that at least in his opinion we had no chance on Boyle. Was a Hawk through and through. Also said he was the real deal as far as being a true athlete. Just an inside piece of info that may help you guys with your discussion.

I have known and watched him for a long time and I would say the same thing. I think the only way Iowa didn't get him is if an SEC team came calling, which never happened.

In my opinion, I think the Paulsens fit in this category as well. Seemed like they were Iowa's from the start as well. But certainly guys we would have taken. As stated earlier, I hate the loss of Nelson to the Hawks, even though I understand he was a Hawk fan and legacy.

What offers did they take then? Where are they playing now?

Class of 14- 2 or 3ended up at IWCC, so hopefully things work out and we could snag them. One is at S. Illinois, one or two more are at UNI.
Class of 15- ones goin to northern il, another to cincy, couple are still undecided

So in other words the Big Boys of college football really wanted these super stars. If they really wanted to play at a major school in a major conference they could of walked on and proved their worth then earned a scholarship.

Isn't Lanning a good example of a steal from Iowa? Doesn't he have Hawk roots, but the Ankeny connection seems to have won him to us.

I know the talk was that his family leaned toward the hawks, and he had a brother that played baseball for Nebraska. Bottom line is if a kid is good enough we should probably offer, even if it looks like he may prefer the hawks because you never know for sure what might impress an 18 year old kid and what he'll do.

Didn't Boyle live in Newton or someplace outside DM when he was younger? He may have ended up at Iowa even had we offered, I just think it's a waste of his talent as a qb unless Iowa completely changes their offense to fit his skills, and Kirk isn't known as a coach who will change.

I've lost track, but how many spots do we have left for this years recruiting class?

This is a good question. Does anybody want to do one of those handy charts indicating position targets, verbals and offers?
