Seems to me that GC is putting together a better class in two months than ISU has seen in the last 12 years! The results will speak for themselves on the football field but when I see the lists of schools that ISU is competing with for players, I am very encouraged. Seems to me that GC is not buying all the garbage about ISU being an impossible place to recruit to.

No kidding...
I wonder how well he will recruit when he has become established and has a full recruiting period? Starting to get giddy.

The real proof will be if we can get all of these recruits on campus and producing. I went back and looked at some of the recruiting classes in the past few years and noticed that a lot of the highly touted players never made it here or never panned out. I have faith in Chizek though.

This class is better than I hoped. It is a good class considering the coaching change set us back time wise. I believe GC and his staff have shown that they are and will be aggressive recruiters.

Having said that, this class will still be 10th, 11th, or 12th in the Big XII. How they pan out will be, as always, the key factor.

Where does he seem to be getting most of his recruits, geographically?
Most of his assistants are from SEC country and the south in general, I wonder if we are tapping into that area of the country at much.

it seems a lot of his JUCO transfers are all from the Midwest. So unlike the SEC background, they are getting to other regions.

This class is positioning itself to have a huge impact on the team. I count 4 fulltime returning starters on offense and 6 on defense. Assuming these 10 reclaim their spots (not a given with a new staff), that leaves 12 open spots to fill.

The new starters will come from some combination of last year's backups, guys coming off redshirts, guys coming off injuries, and new recruits. Typically there are usually only 2-3 new starters that step in immediately from a recruiting class. The most that I recall is 4 and that includes the year that Mac brought in 19 Jucos. I would not be suprised to see at least 6 and possibly as many as 10 new signees in the lineup on opening day. I'll reserve judgement as to whether or not that is a cause for optimism or pessimism.

I do relize that GC has only been here now for a few months, and has done good in the short time he has been here, but to say he is putting better class then we have seen in 12 years is a strech. Looking at our average star rating on our classes the past 5 years..
2006-2.50
2005-2.52
2004-2.43
2003-2.46
2002-2.77
As it stands right now, we have an average of 2.15 for 2007.

that number is a little skewed becuase a few of the recruits are listed as 0 stars by rivals. It is my understanding that those recruits will eventually be evaluated and given a star rating. That will, in turn, bring up our average rating. Assuming that the three unranked guys get a 2 star, that will bring our average to around 2.5.

All that said, do star ratings really matter?

True, but to say we are putting together a better class in 2 months then we have seen in 12 years is over doing it. Give it a few years, and I would think this would be a true statement, but I would not get to overexcited about this coming year.

I'm definitely impressed with the raw speed GC's been able to get over 2 months. I think we've got some solid contributors lined up, provided they actually make it to campus. I don't know if it's just the bane of college recruiting in general, or Iowa State specifically, but it won't mean a damn thing if these guys never suit up. I think I'll wait til next fall to declare it the best class in 12 years, but I wouldn't be surprised if this does turn out to be one of the best in ISU history.

BTW, I'm still waiting for one Mr. Ivan Chiriaev to come dominate the paint for us. Anyone w/ me?

Well, let's look at another way. I count 7 3-star players signed this year, and 1 4-star. I know, I know, stars do not matter all that much, but they do have some merit. How many times in the last 12 years have we brought in more that 8 3-star and above recruits? I doubt it has happened a lot.

Plus, throw in the fact that Chiz did this in about 2 months time. Imagine the possibilities of having him hit the recruiting trail for a full year.

Only if you want them to. I would say no, web sites "evaluating" talent and subsequently assigning stars to players is funny. I'll trust the guys who are getting 6 and 7 figures to evaluate talent, coach, and watch film. Web sites don't have the resources to seriously evaluate every high school player in America. I would trust more in just looking at a player's accomplishments, e.g. a player who is all-state as opposed to someone who is 2nd team all-division. Local people who cover their respective high school teams probably have more of an idea than people who try to do it "nationally". I for one don't get caught up in rankings, considering the number of high school kids in this country.

Acctually, you would be surprised

2005- 9 - 3 stars, 2 - 4 stars
2004- 10 - 3 stars, 1 - 4 star
2003- 12 - 3 stars
2002- 8 - 3 stars, 6 - 4 stars

Wow, that is surprising. Thanks for the research chuck. Of those players, I would be very interested to see how many of those actually played a down for us. Is there a way you can find that out? How many of those 3 and 4 star players never made it to ISU?

In 2005, the 4 stars were Paul Fisher and Walter Nickel. The other 4 stars in the past 5 years have been Webster Patrick, Austin Flynn, Stevie Hicks, Curtis James, Collin Menard, Fedrico Samuel, and Max Steward. There are 4 names on this list that I have never even heard of.

It dosent give the info on rivals to as who really ended up playing and who didnt, you would have to cross referance that to the acctual roster for that year. I am sure there are alot that never acctualy made it to ISU, but that is still to be determined with GC first class.

I am not saying GC is doing a bad job, for a first year coach, I would acctually like to see how he is doing compaired to other 1st year coaches out there. Im just saying compaired to classes from the past 5 or 6 years, this one will probably be our worst.

This team is going to surprise alot of people this season

Well in all honesty, can we be any worse then last season? I mean I know we loose pretty much our whole offensive line, but that was one of our major weaknesses last season. I just cant see this team being any worse then last season. I would guess 4 or 5 wins, and if we get 6, I would be estatic!
