Really stupid taunting call.

Are you messing with me, because you just said you thought he did slightly celebrate before going into the end zone? There are some semantics going around because those terms are used in describing the primary rule, which was Unsportsmanlike Conduct, and he was hit with Article 1-a-1-(e).
Slight celebration =\= taunting to me.

He didn’t taunt. He has the right to look behind himself to check for a defender. He high-stepped. That’s insane for it to be a penalty when there wasn’t a defender within 25 yards. I have never seen such an egregious misuse of the unsportsmanlike penalty in any game.

Apparently, according to a couple confused Cyclone fans, you are only allowed to run at the same speed, at the same gait, and you cannot swivel your head, or it’s unsportsmanlike conduct.

Mind blowing.

…in an alternate universe where looking back, taking one small skip step, and putting the ball in one hand (with no player within 20 yards)is unsportsmanlike conduct.

You either did not watch the play, or you don’t watch modern football.

Nice edit.

I watched the play. I figured he might get called for UC, and sure enough...he did.

They say it's celebration because he broke stride, changed speed slightly and did a bit of a skip. No, it's not excessive to us, but to that dumb ass ref in the moment it does so why argue?
Yep, that is almost exactly how it is worded in rule. We don't like it. Judgement call and his judgement sucked!

I don’t know what to say at this point. You are either misinterpreting the rules, or you need to watch the replay. It simply was not unsportsmanlike conduct.

"Specifically prohibited acts and conduct include:
....An unopposed ball carrier obviously altering stride when approaching the opponent’s goal line or diving into the end zone."

What does the NCAA football rule book say?

I won't look since it's over and bonus: ISU won and it's sadly not really that high on a list of some awful calls against ISU.

AGAIN, thank the dumb ass referee. He ignited a spark in the team. I don't think we win without this penalty happening.

Pointing at an opponent, grabbing your nuts, flipping into the end-zone, sure throw the flag and take the td off the board. Checking over your shoulder for a defender and taking a high step or two into the end-zone with no one closer than 40 yards? GTFOH

I don't know how long this rule has been on the books, but I wonder how many pick sixes, kick off returns and punt returns have there been that are much worse than a look over the shoulder and skip at the 3? And I have never heard of this type of reaction from an official.

It does not say that looking over ones shoulder or slowing slightly is an automatic personal foul. I know this because I’ve watched football before.

Ok, but he also didn’t celebrate. It wasn’t about taunting or celebrating. He “obviously altered his stride when he approached the goal line” per the rule…which I’m still saying is bunk because it was one step. One step is not obvious. Someone had to be pre-charged or affected by actions after the play to come to that conclusion.

Would love to see when the flag actually came out. Not sure I care much about it now anymore.
