A minimum number of sports is required to be NCAA Div I and and to be a member of the Big 12. ISU is quite close to, if not at, those limits...
I agree. For that matter why should anyone have to support college sports. Support for a college sports program should be voluntary, even if your a student or an alumni.
No I don't, but it'll be better than if the coach and likely a couple more of our players left.
I am a GMac supporter. However, for those that are not I have some advice. Do not cut off your dollars to the ISU Athletic Department. Lack of money limits options.
Unfortunately, thats what is going on in college athletics now adays. I would imagine that the number of schools around the country that are self sufficient is under 5%. There is no way for any school outside of the Big10 or major powerhouses to comply with both Title IX and be self sufficient.
This does seem to get brought up about every year so its hard to know how serious this really is. But, if this does go through then I dont know how UNI will be able to field any teams. I assume that their basketball program is self sufficient right now, but I doubt its enough to support a womans team as well.
Again.... the benefits from the athletic department in terms of new student recruitment, university atmosphere, and alumni\donor retention and goodwill pay back every dollar contributed from outside sources manyfold.
Agreed. Without getting deep into the debate of whether it is right or wrong to use any tax dollars for athletics, it is absurd to think that the general public doesn't benefit at all from the athletic programs.
I don't have kids in school, should I be off the hook for paying taxes for the education and athletics of children in my community? Not a perfect analogy, but similar.
Someone brought up before that they thought Iowa only pays in-state tuition for their student athletes scholarships. I dont know if this is true or not, but couldnt ISU do the same? I would assume that Geoffrey has the authority to make this happen and that should make up the shortfall.
You mention saving $500K by not making the move this year but yet you fail to mention the other $2 mil that was needed to make this happen. If the athletic department doesnt have that money then it doesnt really matter how much they would save by waiting another year.
Lost revenue for that year may be $2 million. I know I'm not wasting money on another basketball game/weekend until there's a change. I'm betting I'm not the only one.
You'd have to provide evidence that Iowa does that, because I really doubt it. Reason being - what incentive would any player have in coming to the state of Iowa to play college athletics if Iowa actually was doing that and ISU started? It's not as if these athletes couldn't go to other schools more financially flush that would be willing to pay their whole way.

I think what is being referred to is that the athletic department budget at Iowa is only having to pay the school the in-state rate for all their out-of-state recruits thereby saving the athletic dept. money. The student athletes are on a full-ride scholarship no matter how the accounting is handled.

Exactly. Its not unheard of... my brother got a scholarship (academic) at TAMU and i believe they gave him a waiver to in-state tuition as well.
