Real Reason Greg Still Here

I don't ever want to see Hilton become a joke like Carver, no matter how bad the team gets. McD will last only as long as the major donors want him around, which by my estimate will be significant improvement next year or you're gone.

If McD got fired this year, you could add in a couple more players leaving, and starting from scratch next year. Maybe it's just delaying the inevitable, but I'd rather see where his new crop of talent takes us, than where we'd be without it.

You think next years 'talent' will be any better then what we had this season? Wow...

They can't cut either of those due to Title IX restrictions I thought. We'll probably lose something like men's cross country.

A minimum number of sports is required to be NCAA Div I and and to be a member of the Big 12. ISU is quite close to, if not at, those limits...

This just in...the sky is blue and grass is green.

The Des Moines Register breaking another story that everyone has known for months.

Can we also have someone who does not guarantee the farm draw up the next contract?
It's easy to ask for the fan's money, as long as someone is accountable when it is given away.

I think this is fair. I'm not sure why tax payers who don't have college degrees, and may not even be a fan of a particular state school should have to support men's CC or softball.
I agree. For that matter why should anyone have to support college sports. Support for a college sports program should be voluntary, even if your a student or an alumni.

I am a GMac supporter. However, for those that are not I have some advice. Do not cut off your dollars to the ISU Athletic Department. Lack of money limits options.

Unfortunately, thats what is going on in college athletics now adays. I would imagine that the number of schools around the country that are self sufficient is under 5%. There is no way for any school outside of the Big10 or major powerhouses to comply with both Title IX and be self sufficient.

This does seem to get brought up about every year so its hard to know how serious this really is. But, if this does go through then I dont know how UNI will be able to field any teams. I assume that their basketball program is self sufficient right now, but I doubt its enough to support a womans team as well.

Again.... the benefits from the athletic department in terms of new student recruitment, university atmosphere, and alumni\donor retention and goodwill pay back every dollar contributed from outside sources manyfold.

Agreed. Without getting deep into the debate of whether it is right or wrong to use any tax dollars for athletics, it is absurd to think that the general public doesn't benefit at all from the athletic programs.

I don't have kids in school, should I be off the hook for paying taxes for the education and athletics of children in my community? Not a perfect analogy, but similar.

Whoa saving $500K by not doing it this year, big ******* deal. Pollard is becoming a joke of an AD.

Someone brought up before that they thought Iowa only pays in-state tuition for their student athletes scholarships. I dont know if this is true or not, but couldnt ISU do the same? I would assume that Geoffrey has the authority to make this happen and that should make up the shortfall.

You mention saving $500K by not making the move this year but yet you fail to mention the other $2 mil that was needed to make this happen. If the athletic department doesnt have that money then it doesnt really matter how much they would save by waiting another year.

Lost revenue for that year may be $2 million. I know I'm not wasting money on another basketball game/weekend until there's a change. I'm betting I'm not the only one.

You'd have to provide evidence that Iowa does that, because I really doubt it. Reason being - what incentive would any player have in coming to the state of Iowa to play college athletics if Iowa actually was doing that and ISU started? It's not as if these athletes couldn't go to other schools more financially flush that would be willing to pay their whole way.

It's ridiculous.
The Board of Regents are asking athletic departments to conform to Title IX yet expecting those same departments to operate like a private business as far as revenue generating is concerned.

I think what is being referred to is that the athletic department budget at Iowa is only having to pay the school the in-state rate for all their out-of-state recruits thereby saving the athletic dept. money. The student athletes are on a full-ride scholarship no matter how the accounting is handled.

Well, I goofed this up somehow and it ended up as two posts instead of one.

I think you are right that we are at the minimum number of sports offered.

Exactly. Its not unheard of... my brother got a scholarship (academic) at TAMU and i believe they gave him a waiver to in-state tuition as well.
