well, they had stone castles by that point :P

Actually, that's probably what impresses me more (though the idea of them seeing a phone or internet is cool) thinking about how they did what they did with what they had. England has giant, beautiful stone churches that are twice as old as this country. The Easter Island statues, explorers successfully navigating oceans by the constellations........it's all interesting to me to think about.

Heck, I remember when I was younger and GPS was coming out - I thought that would just be impossible, it would have to know every street and if you were turning.....it sounded so futuristic to me as a kid.

There weren't a lot of stone castles in Hawaii. But bigger picture, yes. I actually originally started with medieval times, but most think of Europe and stone castles then, and I'd imagine it wasn't particularly hot in England in a stone castle back then compared to a hut in Hawaii.

Heck, it's even newer than that...the largest growth cities in the US since the mid 20th century are pretty much all in the south. Atlanta, LA, Vegas, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, Miami, etc...all those cities absolutely boomed after air conditioning and refrigeration became cheap and effective, and the northeast either slowed growth or shrank. There are other factors, obvs (the rust belt and steel), but air conditioning and refrigeration really played a significant role in the boom of the southern cities. I read an article on it with a cool motion infographic a while back, but can't find it in a short search now.

This appears to be the strategy employed by the softball screamer across the street from me. Dude always has his shirt off, and he's not built for it. I've seen his family get home from somewhere, he gets out of the suburban, walks to the back of the vehicle by the garage door, takes his shirt off, then goes back in to start unloading the vehicle.

Those are the guys that went out in those little boats for fishing. And like, they came here from some other far away island. Brave dudes.
 
So 3.5 hours of moving 5 yards of topsoil in a wheelbarrow is not as fun as it sounds. Pretty sure I'm gonna need a back transplant.

Boxster, I also have gotten to do window work the last few days. I live in an older home and have spent the last couple of days replacing bad outer molding and a couple of sills. Get to start painting them all tomorrow if I don't get rained out. I really can't complain about how long they lasted but it's a tedious process. Hopefully won't have to screw around with them for a long time.
 
Rev, How about a bottle of wine for the Bday party hosts? watching the kiddos play at the orchard while sipping wine seems like a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
