Good lord, still reverting back to the idea that the backup is going to be better. Great plan there folks.
No one is saying the backups are better. People are sick of seeing the same lack of production from Richardson. He has had moments where he looked like a legit quality quarterback. Unfortunately he has been average or worse for a majority of the time. It hasn't just been two games. He is a 5th year senior and should be producing a lot more now. The last two games there have been multiple times where recievers have been open and he had plenty of time to throw either didn't throw it or made a bad pass. He looks like he is afraid to make a decision. I would rather have Jantz in as quarterback. At least he was exciting to watch.

The backups may be worse but people are just sick and tired of the current product on the offensive side of the ball.

Wait, you are sick and tired of bad play from a QB, but you think the solution would be to put in one of two guys who isn't even as good as the starter?

So how is your solution going to do anything to improve the product?

This is it people, live with it. If there was even a remote chance either of our back-ups were able to compete, we'd have heard about it like we have the previous years. The sooner everyone stops thinking the QB is the sole problem for all of our woes and the product on the field, the easier this season will go down for you.

As much as I'd like to think a QB change would "fix" the offense, at this point I have to believe that crap offense is a systemic problem under Rhoads, for whatever reason, and there is little to no hope that a Rhoads team can achieve even an average offense.

I'd like to see at least a little bit of Lanning or Rohach, mostly just because I'm curious by nature and like to try new things. It at least might make a few of these games mildly interesting running QB experiments.

Not saying that real life can reflect that experiment.

Sometimes it's not about being "better", it's about being different.

Or maybe, giving Lanning some game experience under Rhoads would actually be worse because then he'd have been exposed to the systemic problems in real game time, like exposure to a virus without any personal protective equipment on...

Get the man a running game and watch his confidence and ability grow. Making a change now is not the answer.

Edit: offensive staff should pop in some Jim Harbaugh game film from SF and Michigan and look how he helps guys like Alex Smith and Rudock look halfway decent.

Per the idea that Iowa's defensive adjustments made things difficult...from what I've read, Iowa didn't make many schematic adjustments; I think they just played harder, and ISU didn't match it or they don't have the ability to.

If a 3-4 man front is closing a pocket that quickly, and receivers aren't able to get open, it's awfully difficult for the QB to make many decisions or get a throw off.

What if Lanning can be a running game?

"Any football mind knows that the best thing you can do with a quarterback is put the fear into him that the first mistake he makes or first three and out he has, he's going to get yanked. THAT'S how you get production out of your quarterback."

-Paul Rhoads, 2012

I put blame on the offensive coaching staff. Where is the short passing game? When our O-Line struggles to block for the longer routes, like they did in the 2nd half against Iowa, why didn't we go to some quick hitters and allow our receivers to make some plays with their legs. Why didn't we throw some screens or quick-outs on 1st down to get us some positive yardage? Why not put in Lanning for a couple plays to run the ball, or at least the Zone Read, just to show the D something different? When the offensive line is struggling, you can't continue to try to run the ball like we were and try to throw timing routes 15 yards down the field. I give Mangino an F for the 2nd half!

The lack of production is form the whole damn offense.
  1. Drive killing penalties by Dagel and Taiese
  2. Drops by Lazard
  3. Missed blocks by the RBs
  4. Missed holes by the RBs
  5. Hesitation by RBs
  6. Not getting off the line by WRs
  7. **** poor adjustements by the offensive staff
  8. pressure up the middle allowed by the OL
  9. Sam being more consistent

I guess I am not seeing all these WRs being open and if they are they are on the opposite side of the called play and are covered when he checks.

Sam needs to get better. There is no doubt about that but there is a lot on our offense that needs to get better.

With Lazard's three drops, I fully expected to see a Lazard thread. His last drop was pretty big.

I said this right after the game. We should be running Okie St. circa 2011 offense. 5 yard sidleline stop, 5 yard sideline stop, qb or rb draw. Then do it again...over and over and over until those DB's are so bit up they can't even fathom a ball going over the top then you run the all go's and deep crosses.

Agree with all this but Lanning.

  1. short routes- iowa did a good job not letting our WRs off the line and defending the short stuff. even when we had Wesley on a LB and Daley with a S
  2. WRscreens- see above but we should have done more
  3. should have run the ball off the left side because in both games, that is where we get our yardage. One play off the left side in the second half
  4. Sam has to start keeping onthe zone read. I don't know if they aren't allowing it or what but he needs to start keeping. iowa had a back up DE in th egame....should have ran zone read at him all day
