People are getting super defensive (as usual) but the OP has a point, even if it's poorly phrased.
For having a QB that's proven to be NFL starting material, an RB that was lighting up the league before injury, having Kolar, and have a receiver like Hutch our offensive output was rather pedestrian. The same design flaws we have now were present then, we just had more talent to overcome the self-inflicted wounds.
Breeze was a baller and Purdy's ability to create under pressure extended plays that should have been blown up. The fact he was chosen as late as he was is in part a testament to how Mickey Mouse the offense was. Now that he's in a competent system that utilizes a lot of vertical slants (timing) he's thriving. Shocker.
Aiyuk and Purdy at the Steelers lunch all day long. Rocco has shown he can throw those balls but we have to give him the routes. We employ very little in the way of vertical timing throws and that's maddening.
So yeah, I think it's fair to say the results could have, and probably even should have been better considering the talent we had here. Play design and line play have sabotaged a lot of potential.
