Purdy at ISU

We won a Fiesta Bowl and had the best season in school history with Purdy. It's like everyone forgot. The revisionist history with how good we were, and how good Purdy was at Iowa State is insane. He was the best QB to ever play here and it wasn't close. We also had by far the best 4 year stretch in school history. Also not close. Not sure what else fans expect? We still only put out like 4-5 NFL players over that stretch. Power house schools put out 4-5+ per year.

Also, there are tons of great NFL QBs who were on bad/average college teams. Mahomes did less at Texas Tech than Purdy did here is one example of many. Josh Allen @ Wyoming, Lamar Jackson went 8-5, 9-4, 8-5 as a starter @ Louisville, in a bad conference. Rodgers @ Cal. Daniel Jones went 8-5, 4-8, 7-6, 8-5 @ Duke. Dak Prescott went 7-6, 8-5, 9-4, 10-3 @ Mississippi State.

Basically if you're not playing for a blue blood, it's still a struggle for even an NFL caliber QB to win big in college. Blue Bloods just have soooo much more talent across the board.

While I understand there's an argument to be made over how that season would've played out in a normal year, it irritates me that we have so many people on here try to diminish it.

I might sound like that camp but my basic take is that ISU's record is the generally the same, but the KSU and WV wins aren't as lobsided since they were having issues. But ISU was still better than them by quite a bit and beats them in normal times.

A couple of other games were the difference between getting some bounces/making the plays at the right time (BU, Texas) and 2021 when it didn't happen.

Either way Purdy's years were a very successful run.

As a whole our fanbase appreciated him quite a bit, and yet still probably underappreciated him.

Last season gave me a new appreciation for him for sure especially in demeanor, leadership and relatively speaking, play making.

I think this is the wrong argument. Of course we did historically good things while he was here.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I always felt he had a bit of a weak arm as a cyclone.

His arm talent looked great last year. Even better today.

Is NFL coaching that much better?

And completely on the defense. Purdy played his ass off in both games.

Just coming here to share similar thoughts. ISU’s defenses when Purdy was playing were not on the same level as last years/hopefully this years defense. The 2021 season is when our defense really started taking the next step but still had a some bad/head scratching performances that year.

The back end of the secondary leaked and the D line didn't get the same kind of pressure. I think the 3-3-5 got found.

Before the draft he went to some mechanics guru that helped him out.

Yes. And he had more time to work.

And frankly it's a testament to the program culture that we didn't have any cancellations or major issues with Covid.
If I remember right, we had a huge chunk of the team get sick and not practice right before the season. Many starters basically didn't practice the 1-2 weeks leading up to the first game due to the covid rules at the time. There's a reason we looked terrible against Louisiana. So it's not like we weren't affected by it.

We had a weak offensive line and he ran for his life a lot and still performed.

It’s wild how good BP looks behind an NFL offensive line. Shame the 2 stars we were bringing in from valley and waukee couldn’t protect him in Ames
