Purdy at ISU

If I remember right, we had a huge chunk of the team get sick and not practice right before the season. Many starters basically didn't practice the 1-2 weeks leading up to the first game due to the covid rules at the time. There's a reason we looked terrible against Louisiana. So it's not like we weren't affected by it.

True. Still I’d rather have it happen then rather than during the season or before the CCG/bowl

I love that Purdy is having success in the NFL. He sure looked good today putting the beat down on my Steelers. However, I'm surprised how well he is doing. In college, I thought he threw A LOT of 50/50 balls in the general vicinity of the receiver, as opposed to having great accuracy, and we were lucky enough to have big receivers that would win most of those. His accuracy seems better now.

People are getting super defensive (as usual) but the OP has a point, even if it's poorly phrased.

For having a QB that's proven to be NFL starting material, an RB that was lighting up the league before injury, having Kolar, and have a receiver like Hutch our offensive output was rather pedestrian. The same design flaws we have now were present then, we just had more talent to overcome the self-inflicted wounds.

Breeze was a baller and Purdy's ability to create under pressure extended plays that should have been blown up. The fact he was chosen as late as he was is in part a testament to how Mickey Mouse the offense was. Now that he's in a competent system that utilizes a lot of vertical slants (timing) he's thriving. Shocker.

Aiyuk and Purdy at the Steelers lunch all day long. Rocco has shown he can throw those balls but we have to give him the routes. We employ very little in the way of vertical timing throws and that's maddening.

So yeah, I think it's fair to say the results could have, and probably even should have been better considering the talent we had here. Play design and line play have sabotaged a lot of potential.

While I understand there's an argument to be made over how that season would've played out in a normal year, it irritates me that we have so many people on here try to diminish it.

I’m not trying to diminish it. I’m just being real about it. It’s not the same as any other Fiesta Bowl appearance/win. That’s just facts.

For ****'s sake. From 2017 to 2021, Iowa State had the SECOND most conference wins of any Big 12 team. So by any measure, we were the second best Big 12 team. I don't know what it was from 2018-2021 when Purdy was playing, but I'm guessing it was 3rd. That is unprecedented at Iowa State. WE WERE VERY GOOD WHEN HE WAS HERE.

Some of you act like we averaged 3 god damned wins.
Exactly and I’m confused what people want as a solution. Campbell is as good as we get. I love Campbell. Did you guys forget where we were before Campbell arrived on scene or did you just not have to go through the pain of 2-10/1-11 seasons? Campbell is still young and learning too. I agree he needs to figure out his offense but we will not ever get anyone better that actually wants to be here. Quit trying to run the best football coach away in Iowa state history

Said another way "Coaching".

Way to early for heavy Campbell criticism, but he is heading toward to path that ends will him no longer coaching at ISU.

He seems to think ISU is fine without winning as long as we can be proud of the team and programs. And that is wrong. I want BOTH!

And frankly I've never had the winning before, save for his very nice 4 year run, and a few other enjoyable yet, short blips. So at this point I want Winning and if that requires sacrificing some pride in the program... Id like to give it a shot.

Yes, and CMC has made adjustments to his staff. Clanton was a huge hire and will do special things for our o-line but it's not going to be over night. We are such an instant satisfaction society...
Ill take a flier on Clanton. But after two games, I wouldn't even know there was a new OC. How much difference would Dekkers have made Saturday? I'm not convinced any, so take take that away too.

IOWA STATE PLAYED (AND NEARLY WON) A CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP AND WON A FIESTA BOWL WITH BROCK PURDY.

At Iowa State. Sure 2021 was disappointing (not by ISU standards). What else do you want/expect???

Not a single person is going to argue that Purdy, Hall, and others were part of a golden era of ISU football - one where numerous records were shattered and, quite frankly, may never be touched again.

That doesn’t mean it couldn’t - and shouldn’t - have been better.

The same gutless offense we lamented on Saturday as well as all last season was the same gutless offense we ran while Purdy was here. The difference is much of the time it didn’t matter if the defense could predict what we were going to run - our players were talented enough where they couldn’t be stopped.

But a lot of people forget that Purdy’s senior year wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows - in fact, it’s likely the reason why he slid all the way to the final pick of his draft. And statistically Purdy got worse the longer he stayed at ISU.

I’m not taking away from Purdy - he’s the greatest QB to ever come out of ISU. But at the same time I can recognize it should have been even better if the coaches hasn’t handcuffed the offense.

It's not all on the staff either though. Purdy also got away with throwing a ton of jump balls to Butler and a couple of stud TE's. If anything I think Brock has learned a lot and has figured out how to play within his abilities.

What never gets talked about enough with that 2021 team is the number of super seniors that came back for their covid year. I've heard first hand that really impacted the locker room and some of those guys weren't exactly "all in".

Its a lazy argument. If you can't look back and appreciate that Iowa State won a ******* Fiesta bowl, then something is wrong with you.
It was great, appreciate it, enjoy it, celebrate it. I certainly did. I don’t think anyone is asking you not to.

What you can’t do (IMO) is point to that season as evidence to expect Campbell can repeat that level of success, or point to that season as a reason to not be critical of Campbell now and going forward.

The whole CFB season should have an asterisk by it, the results were tainted in so many ways. I also think we had a great team, which makes it even more unfortunate for us.
