Projected Starting Lineup for Sept 3rd Kickoff vs. UNI

Edwards didn't even play much at Duke. If he's starting, I think we're in trouble. They brought him in for depth as much as anything. There are quite a few players I feel would play in the defensive backfield before Edwards, like Thad Daniels, Jay Jones and Jomal Wiltz, for starters.

I don't see Edwards starting either. He'll provide depth, but I don't think he's the best we have by any means. He wasn't much of an impact at Duke, so I guess I hope he's not better than everyone else we have.

As for Jay Jones, I still think his best asset is rushing the QB. With his 6'3" frame and his long levers he was very good at getting around the edge. I thought he was our best outside pass rusher we had last year. I hate to see us not use him there this year. But I suppose he can come off the edge as a DB just as easily as a LB, right?

This is why it makes me think he will be at the nickel. Really easy to bring a blitz from the nickel spot

Your comment makes no sense concerning Edwards from Duke. Edwards was a Redshirt Sophomore backup to DeAndre Singleton last year. DeAndre Singleton will be a 4 year starter and has been a damn good safety and was in the same recruiting class as Edwards. Edwards backed him up and has 2 years of eligibility remaining. Edwards is a young player. And the defensive secondary of Duke was their main strength.

So Edwards starting does not mean we are in trouble. Edwards is a potential starter at the position. Look at all the other members of our team who have been backups and are now entering their RS Junior seasons. We are expecting them to fill positions. Why would Edwards be any different? And Duke was an 8-5 football team in 2015. We were 3-9.

I think you almost need to have Jones and Northrup on the field at the same time. They're two of our best open field tacklers.

They might be on the field at the same time. Jones is listed as a DB and Northrup as a LB. Doesn't sound like the same position.

Wasn't the staff pretty high on Marcel Spears at LB too? He looks the part IMO, but I have no idea about his cover skills, his speed, tackling ability, etc. He just looks like a really good promising young LB.

Yes. RS Freshman this fall. Might be similar to what Harvey and Northrup were last year when they played as RS Freshmen. Spears has talent.

I think we have some promise at the LB for the first time in a few years. Be nice if we can fill the big boys up in front with similar talent. This D has real potential on paper.

Linebacker concerns me because we are so young and lack a lot of numbers. At the same time the LEO is kind of a hybrid DE and LB combo. And we run 2 full time LB's. And basically 3 safeties along with 2 corners. 2 of the safeties are likely to be more of the hybrid type of player.
