Projected Starting Lineup for Sept 3rd Kickoff vs. UNI

Northrup is listed as a LB. Jay Jones is listed as a DB. So why do some keep thinking they play the same position on our 4-2-5 defense?

It appears to me that Northrup is a LB. With the attrition we have had at LB, it is entirely possible that he plays the same position as Brian Mills. Seeley backs up Willie Harvey. McMillen 3rd string behind Seeley. And Marcel Spears behind Northrup at 3rd string. IMO, it kind of has to be that way since we only have 6 scholarship LB's on our roster. 7 scholarship LB's if you count Special Teams ace Jahlas.

We don't really run any 'base' defense. Campbell's own words in an interview were that if we shifted the leo outside we are now in a 3-3 or 3-4. I think what position Northrup plays is irrelevant. He should labeled resident BA along side Cotton-Moya and Harvey. I think we will see tons of different looks from the defense. Seonbuchner shifting to DE, Northrup to LB, Jones to DB to me just means we will be shifting our defense during the audibles of the offenses to try and create mismatches and slow down the high powered offenses in this conference.

To better answer your question I think of Northrup and Jones as monster backs. Maybe I'm entirely off base, because Campbell is being super tight lipped, but this is me trying to read throught he lines a little bit.

What I am saying is, How can you be so sure that Northrup won't be playing one of the other LB positions rather than in the defensive backfield. We are short on LB numbers.

It's cute you think we are just running a basic 4-2-5.

I'm not sure, I just think 201 lbs is really small for a guy that plays in the middle. Northrup really looked good on the edges, so I see him as a nickle still. No idea what will actually happen. I'm excited though. I love a defense that is active and smart.

Interesting to see that you put Chandler as your starting TE. I have really liked what I have seen from him, but they didn't use him much last year.

Fernandez also looks good and has been here since Spring semester, so he may turn some heads.

And, of course, there is Chase Allen. Seems like he is going to be someone we want on the field.

I see 6 TEs on the football site roster. And that doesn't include Chase Allen. Is that a lot? Some must be walk-ons.

It's not a lot if you think they can block. Other wise yes that's quite a few.

Also forgot to add that I'd think Gabe Luna prob starts of Waggoner..sounds like Luna is finally healthy and had great spring..those two are prob interchangeable and don't discount Darius White at DE either.

Our defense will be like a 3-3-5. The Leo is like a hybrid DE/LB for pass rushing. So basically it's a combination of our last two systems. Northrup might be listed as a "LB", but he's still more like a hybrid who will be playing more coverage like a DB.

Not to start a QB controversy... But yeah I think I will. Hearing Jacob Park is looking real good so far!

I also would be surprised not to see Edwards starting beside Cotton Moya. Could also see Payne starting on the outside with Peavy and move in to cover slot vs multiple wr formations and passing downs and Jones in Nickel vs run formations and covering the TE. It would also be nice to see Jhausten, Tucker, Luna and Waggoner in our own nascar type package in clear passing situations to get to the QB. The staff has said many times they are going to be multiple and want guys who play multiple positions on D. I think we'll see a lot of guys in multiple spots given the formation and situation. jmo

Hmmm. WIB is on my list of posters who tend to be right about things like this, so this got my attention. Now what about the reporter who said that Park wasn't even on campus yet?

J Jones getting no love. I think he starts with Northrup in during pass downs.

You know I like J jones he's just kinda stuck in between being a small OLB and Nickel..I don't think he's got enough speed to play corner, however I'd anticipate he will play in red zone situations vs TEs due to his length. Idk.

Just a couple switches I'd expect to see by the opening kickoff. I don't see Payne not being a starter after all that the staff has had to say about him thus far. Also, not sure how the 4-2-5 will set up as regards the 5th DB...if that will be a true corner type player or a hybrid like Northrup, but I think its going to at least start out with a true 5 DB's. On the OL, I expect and hope that Udeogu can roll right in to a starting spot which would allow Green and Scroggins to provide some depth.

It will change depending on the opponent and the game situation. There will be times when we are a 4-2-5 and times when we have more of a 4-3 look just with a smaller LB on the field.

Jones could be a great asset in the RZ against either the big WR or TE. It will be interesting to see how they use him outside of that. I could see him playing on the big WRs against teams like iowa who will run the ball a lot. Use him to jam the big guy at the LOS throwing timing off and breaking up the play action a little bit.

The defense will be Harvey and Northrup at LBs, Payne and peavey at the corners. J Jones at nickel, Thadd Daniels and cotton moya at ss. Luna at one end

WR3 epps TE Fernandez

So does the M position = slot receiver because I was under the impression that they are different positions and require a different type of player so could see a few different guys rotating in at the 3rd WR spot? Also think that we will see either Luna or Bailey at Leo.

i think this is correct. I don't think Ryen will start Because I think his position won't be the same everytime he is out there. I think we will see him both in the slot and in the backfield with Lanning. I bet he will be used in a ton of sweeps and screens.

I just think the M position will be multiply positions and could be anything from taking a slot spot or half back stop on the field. Hell Ryen could even be used for a wildcat set.

Give me E Edwards ar Safety(they didn't bring him in as a grad transfer to not start IMO..think Oge might start on Oline..Yea Ryen will def start at the slot but don't look past incoming freshman D Jones(although unlikely). I see us using more double TE sets or TE and H Back than a 3WR look..just a guess and then remove a WR and out in Fernandez at TE or C Allen(Truly think he's going to be a stud)..

Lastly I agree with others in that Payne starts at DB..Guess it will be intersting to see how guys like Thadd Daniels etc do now that they had a spring under them.

Edwards didn't even play much at Duke. If he's starting, I think we're in trouble. They brought him in for depth as much as anything. There are quite a few players I feel would play in the defensive backfield before Edwards, like Thad Daniels, Jay Jones and Jomal Wiltz, for starters.

He was a "starter" in their 4-2-5 sub package.
