Northrup is listed as a LB. Jay Jones is listed as a DB. So why do some keep thinking they play the same position on our 4-2-5 defense?
It appears to me that Northrup is a LB. With the attrition we have had at LB, it is entirely possible that he plays the same position as Brian Mills. Seeley backs up Willie Harvey. McMillen 3rd string behind Seeley. And Marcel Spears behind Northrup at 3rd string. IMO, it kind of has to be that way since we only have 6 scholarship LB's on our roster. 7 scholarship LB's if you count Special Teams ace Jahlas.
We don't really run any 'base' defense. Campbell's own words in an interview were that if we shifted the leo outside we are now in a 3-3 or 3-4. I think what position Northrup plays is irrelevant. He should labeled resident BA along side Cotton-Moya and Harvey. I think we will see tons of different looks from the defense. Seonbuchner shifting to DE, Northrup to LB, Jones to DB to me just means we will be shifting our defense during the audibles of the offenses to try and create mismatches and slow down the high powered offenses in this conference.
To better answer your question I think of Northrup and Jones as monster backs. Maybe I'm entirely off base, because Campbell is being super tight lipped, but this is me trying to read throught he lines a little bit.
