Pollard on Deadspin

Dont confuse non-profit with poor. The NCAA sold rights to basketball tournament for $10 billion over 14 years. TEN BILLION. And you don't think they are getting rich? The IA HS Athletic Assoc is non-profit but has millions in holdings. Channel 13 did a story on it a few years ago.

The conference sell TV rights for hundreds of millions of dollars. They swap conference partners and disregard 100 year traditions for what, exactly?

And they aren't profiting?

10 billion, yes.

Thats about 700 million a year, but thats just revenue. Now subtract the costs from hosting this event and the multitude (almost 100 iirc) of championships the NCAA holds that lose money. Now divide that by the hundreds of institutions that get a cut of NCAA money. You start getting to relatively small numbers.

Athletes on full scholarship get around $4,000 to cover food, and yet you see guys tweeting about consistently dropping $20 to eat at Applebee's. News flash: You don't always have to go out to eat. You can buy way more than one meal's worth of groceries for $20. Learn to cook. Learn how to spend money wisely. Life skills.

What? There are other places to eat than restaurants? You can bring food to your house?

I remember one particularly bad ice storm where the power went out in my apartment and classes were cancelled. All we had to eat was dry food, couldn't boil water, microwave, nothing. I scrounged about $5 and walked over to Hardee's (some of you remember where it was) because it was the closest place to where I lived that had power so my wife and I could eat. We got food for the both of us for that $5 and were damn happy about it.

What does this have to do with the price of rice in China?

This is an area I'd say NCAA could do better at. Life skills coaching in ways of financial management. It's a problem the persists to the pros. So many have no idea how to sustain a budget and live within their means. So many kids who have had nothing have something and can't manage anything.

I did think that ISU was attempting to address some of this with the football players, some of the recent players on the board could chime in on this though.

Is that where the keg shop used to be on Welch? there's some very faded signs in that parking lot.

He's completely right. But I don't know why he went to twitter to say these things.

This part i might agree with. Its pretty complex to explain why athletes are being more than fairly compensated as is, trying to do it at 140 characters at a time makes it harder to convey the message clearly.

Nope, on S. Duff. Where Panera is iirc.

There were nights when I was in school I would have done unspeakable things to get my hands on a thickburger in Ames. Alas I usually settled for Flying/Fighting Burrito. Damn kids have a Dunkin Donuts now too.

In 2008, the NCAA spent $24 million on "management expenses" and had $26 million in "unspent revenue" (can't call it profit). They also had $350 million in investments.

And that was before the $10 Billion TV contract.

You do realize they are in the UK, right?

Ha, sorry. Grabbed the wrong one. Typing these on the phone and did a search and grabbed the wrong link of the search list. Do a search for "unpaid internship" and you'll see dozens of links addressing this and the push to restrict them entirely as being illegal.
