Phillip Fulmer interested per Cotlar

Fulmer had been struggling at a place where he could bring in top 10-20 recruiting every year. ISU needs a coach that comes from a school that has done it the hard way. Or at least an assistant from one of those schools. That way they know how to turn things around and how to find diamonds in the rough. Fulmer just knows how to get beat by teams with less talent.

They both spent 15 years at Tennessee, with similar success.

Totally disagree! To Majors, winning the SEC was the only important thing. Fulmer had his sights set much higher. And he took us there.

During the 90's, Fulmer had us at heights that Majors never even dreamed of....we are talking a perennial top 5 team every year. People forget that he finished as national runner up in 1996.

With Majors, going 8-3 and ranked #20 was ok, as long as we were SEC champs

VolfanBrian, I'm glad to see that there are a few reasonable Vols fans left out there. I've made the same point about Fulmer vs. Majors before, most recently on this board several weeks ago:
Tennessee fans generally hold the name of Fulmer's predecessor, Johnny Majors, in reverence. I find this rather odd considering that Fulmer has had considerably more success at Tennessee than Majors ever did. Compare Fulmer's 150-51 career record to Majors' 116-62-8 record at Tennessee. Not only that, but Fulmer won a national title, something Majors never did at Tennessee.
Every time I make this argument, though, it falls on deaf ears with the Tennessee fans i know. Maybe you can enlighten us, VolfanBrian. What's the deal with Tennessee fans having an unabashed love-fest for Johnny Majors, but hating Phil Fulmer?

Once Fulmer has been gone for a few years, you will see fans giving him the legend status. There are a lot of fans that now hold Bill battle in high regards even though he was one of worst coaches.

Your take on Majors is a good one. But, and this may be the only time you will see me take up for that boozing ***, when Majors came to Tennessee...we were really in trouble....a lot more than what we are in now. He did rebuild us into at the very least, a respectable SEC team. He didnt really get it going until the late 80s though.

Majors was near sighted because he was raised at a time when all that was important to Tennesseans was a) beating Alabama and b) winning the SEC.

Now....to answer part two of your question.

Fulmer just so happens to be the latest coach to **** of the Vol fans. Give them about 7 or 8 years and he will settle into his place in history.

Majors....**** on him (sorry to anybody this offends). He feels that he was "stabbed in the back by Fulmer" back in 92. All Fulmer did was coach us for 3 games, winning over Florida and Georgia, have us 3-0 and ranked about #15 in the country.

Since Fulmer had the gall to steal his spotlight, Majors came back a little too soon after heart surgery and we finished losing 3 of our next 5 games.

Then AD Doug Dickey had to act on Fulmer because Fulmer was the buzz of college football when he got us off to that 3-0 start. If dickey didnt hire him....then somebody would. So Dickey pulled the trigger and hired Fulmer.

What these ignorant "northern bammer"fans (aka Vol fans) fail to see is that Majors had a contract extension waiting for him when he got back to his office. Only, he held out for more money.

If you are AD, you got a hotshot assistant or a coach who has lost 3 of his last 5 games wanting more nmoney....who are you going to hire?

You are damn right....in a New York second!

Go to Volnation.com and ask how many were still fulmer fans. Many wanted him gone around the 2002 season. 99.9% of them were calling for his head before the 07 season.

Volnation is the king of the "Northern Bammer" boards. I quit posting there back in 04 when we were getting ready for Auburn in the SECCG and you couldn't tell it by their alleged "Vol fans"

My point in comparing the two was not so much what they did while they wer AT UT, but what they did after it (which is what ISU should be concerned about anyway).

Majors clearly had great success at UT, while Fulmer took it to the next level after him. Majors failed miserably at Pitt after he went back while we have no idea what Fulmer will do after TN.

Fulmer taking the ISU job would be fairly similar to Majors taking the Pitt job, IMO, and if that parallel held out, we might be looking at a few years of 3-5 win football.

I stand corrected.

But no question....Tennessee would not be near as successful unless we had both of them!

oh...to turn back the clock and bask in the low of a possible Fulmer hiring....instead of being mired in a potential nightmare Stoops era.

Just got a call from my cousin who is friends with the S&C coach under Fulmer. He said is inquired if Fulmer has said anything to him about ISU. He told my cousin no and that he had talked to Fulmer yesterday. They were talking about options of what to do for the coming year and if they took a year off if the S&C coach would be ok financially.

Bottom line...no mention of ISU by Fulmer to one of his coaches as of yesterday.

Great info. Thanks!

Have your cousin's friend tell Fulmer that he can't afford a year off, and he refuses to work at a non-BCS school.

No way. I don't think the Iowa State program has the passion Fulmer claimed he was looking for

I realize that PF is probably not coming, but I wish people knew how much passion ISU fans reaaly have

Why do you think Stoops is any worse than the current situation we have? Hiring Stoops isn't going to set us back right now. Stoops doesn't have a national championship ceiling, but his ceiling is no lower than mac's was. ISU football will not be hurt by this hire (if this hire actually happens).
