Paul Shirley Interview

Great pod. I really like how Paul’s experience kind of debunks conspiracy theories in a way. The little things that come up really have a big effect on the players that is on the outside just can’t get our heads around.

Nice interview!

Did Floyd recommend LE to ISU? That seems to be what I remember from that time. Shirley said in the interview that the small bit of research he did about LE after he was announced as coach raised red flags for him. It seems reasonable to think that Floyd must have known about LE's issues as well.

That was a really good podcast. Good questions, tone, and general dialogue. I'm intrigued about that pilot episode now.

Well, unless he willing to tell us who put a gun to his head.....why waste another moment listening to him b**** about his time with LE at ISU?

He didn't bring it up...he was asked and answered with what he knows.

Better interview than I expected. I would like one of the other players to confirm some of the stories so I know they aren't greatly embellished to sell books though.

I doubt you’ll find many players come out and say the things Paul has, especially when they are negative towards their past head coach. The fact that no other player has come out and refuted Paul’s claims should pretty much speak for itself.

Nice pod, very informative. My biggest takeaways are that

a) It's true what people say about Paul being a blowhard. Some of his answers go down weird rabbit trails and he rambles often...but is generally interesting at least

b) learned things I never knew, ie Paul was an academic scholly not athletic, Floyd was a really decent guy, not just coach. I feel like Floyd gets overshadowed and under appreciated when talking about ISU Basketball history. Coming in between the legend Johnny and the coach to get us the deepest into NCAA Tourney history probably has a lot to do with that.

c) Eustachy overrated? Easy to see Paul's bias against Larry, but his points can't be ignored. Larry wanted to embody "coach" Floyd but not the "human" Floyd, failing to connect with his players and driving them away with his dictator-esque personality. Eustachy won mostly with Floyd's players, and was regressing at an extremely rapid pace leading up to his eventual total demise with the MO Frat boys and sorority sisters. I had known Paul wasn't fond of Larry, but to hear how passionate he is about it first hand almost makes me want to view Larry in a different (worse) light.

Two hours practices of nothing but rebounding drills will earn you that designation.

Too bad he couldn't just let his play do his talking then. I only remember him as a whiny douchebag.

Get over it! I think he did let his play talk while while he was here. I remember him as a good and hard working player. I don't recall him talking about the team until after he left.
