Paul Rhoads on Daniel Kuehl

I think the question was a fair and understandable question though. I wondered how he was doing myself. Is he down? How did the team respond to him since the last play of the game? Now all we might have heard was canned responses but I have wondered how the kid has been doing since that play. It is human nature to wonder how the kid handled this situation.

But the guy is getting a LOT of flack for underthrowing the pass. Somebody needed to vehemently defend Kuehl. I bet people have only been asking him about the 2-point fake, and if I'm Rhoads, I'm taking people's criticism of Kuehl as indirect criticism of my pretty solid play calling. I would be sick of it.

That said, I would have liked to have seen the same set-up, except a Statue of Liberty taking Mahoney to the right. Make the Husker special teams have no idea what is going on, and trust the starting kicker's legs over the backup punter's arm.

Hey, I didn't hear anybody saying these things about Kuehl before CPR mentioned them. He changed the conversation. Now, I look forward to the next thing that Kuehl does. His ratio of snaps to ballsy plays is extremely high! It sounds like he is the kind of guy who can't wait for the next opportunity to make a big play or win a game for us.

I felt on that one, the ball could have been placed better. Still fine enough to catch/place or catch and get up to throw, but I think the less-than-great snap is what caused Kuehl to have trouble getting a handle on the football.

For all of us that keep rolling that play over and over and over and over and over and over and over again in our heads - I can only imagine what that kid is seeing/feeling.

Franklin wide open and it didn't get completed. Depending on how the next 2 games go, losing to NE could be the game that holds us out of the North title and a shot to play for the Big 12 title.

However, that one play is just one in about a list of 30+ that has us at 3-3 in conference. We could easily be 5-1 had just a couple plays gone our way against KSU and NU. Yes, Kuehl played a major roll - but it was just one swing play out of very many.

Still sucks, that ball is complete and we're all talking about real chances of winning the next 2 games and playing for a Big 12 title in just year 2 of the Paul Rhoads era. Sucks that won't happen - but it's also pretty damn cool we are on that doorstep after 3 straight seasons ('06-'09of looking like a bunch of blind elfs on a football field and a miraculous bowl appearance in year 1 of a new coach.

I love the response by CPR. I'm sick of some reporters and some fans worrying about Kuehl's emotions, like he's a 7-year old girl. Shows me how none of them ever played the game before. Daniel Kuehl is a D1 college football player that's an integral part of this team. He's had his great plays, and he's had his bad ones. Just like everyone else on the team, he'll put this behind him and go out and beat Colorado on Saturday.

I have not heard the way the question was worded or how it was said but I don't see anything in that type of question that is an attack? Again, the play happened and nothing will change that. But how is the kid's state of mind? How is he responding on a personal level, not necessarily how he will respond when asked to perform that play the next time. I hope the kid walked into his classes today with his head held high and other students patted him on the back!

exactly. the ball was fluttering as soon as it left his hand. it was underthrown but the fact it didn't come out as a spiral just made it easier for the wind to grab. the kid got nervous and made a bad pass, that's it.

Yes. The snap was not great. It was not good on the last FG attempt also. I think in both instances, Kuehl did a good job of digging out the two short snaps, but I think they contributed to the timing just being a tad off.

In the fake, I think it was a case of Kuehl's mind panicking a little when the snap was off. I am sure his heart was going 200 bpm, then the relatively poor snap caused the whole thing to cluster.

Easy to say that he could have collected himself and thrown a good ball, but **** happens and I am still 100% behind the call and players.

I said it in another thread, but any fake there that involved either of our kickers running wide on NU's defense would have been met with resounding failure.

I hope the team and the coaching staff is not just dwelling on this..... We need to win out and play in one of the Texas bowls.
 
Paul Rhoads should not be so defensive about this kid but at the same time, he needs to put any ******** about Dan K to rest. So IMO its appropriate.
 
The fact is that last plays get FAR FAR too much attention. It is human instinct. It is what gets set in our mental memory. We see the last play. But really, how many plays really cost us that game? There are probably 10 or more you could name. And how many GREAT plays got is in to a position to even be in OT. Each play can't stand alone. Even if it is the last one.

Im just wondering if this will affect Rhoads going forward? In terms of decision making?

Exactly. It is the ultimate team sport and it requires a team effort
