The first post in the Cave thread was informative with good info. Of course, the second post blamed "RWNJ media" for the reason why the news wasn't covering it. People have their sides, they desperately want the dopamine hit that comes with the "I owned my political rival" feeling.

Yay humanity.

Edit: - This is the member who made the second post. - Classy as always. :)

Agreed, this is an absolute travesty. Last I knew, the red cross hasnt showed up, Fema hasnt showed up, these people have nothing now.

What is "RWNJ"?

This is horrible for the people of that community. Even though they are saying it is safe to return. I would not return yet unless I had to. I wonder when we are going to know the cause of the derailment?

Ok. Makes sense. Aren't most of the large media companies pretty far left though?

Either way, it's interesting that there isn't much coverage.
No. They follow whatever makes profits that particular hour.

This is no different. Balloons and UFOs draw eyeballs and get attention, without negative publicity. This indecent? Negative and local to a specific area. Not as profitable. Files near the "Flint Water Crisis" page, which rapidly disappeared after a short stint.

The cleanup/help efforts have definitely been lacking for this incident, but even with better help, the affected area is still largely screwed long term.

I thought I read somewhere that it was a mechanical failure - can't remember the exact language, but it made me picture the axel on a car shearing off at/near the wheel.

Why wouldn't this draw attention? They destroyed a town and God knows how many animals. Then there is the potential aftermath of people getting very sick. It's a disaster movie. Seems like a money maker to me.

It's a disaster movie we've all seen before. Nuclear breakdowns, oil spills, bad water supplies. Been there done that. Cool for a day or two then it's out of cycle.

UFOs? Shooting stuff out of the sky? Uncharted, exciting, new territory (plus more things kept getting down down or found every few days, reigniting the story). Tiny town in Ohio versus international air space activity, hmmm...

There is also the aspect of how the policies of the rail companies and the impact of congress shutting down the rail strike played into this. The rail workers wanted better working conditions and more reasonable management policies, including more rigorous inspection and maintenance policies. Congress shot down the strike in order to avoid economic impacts, and completely acquiesced to the rail companies.

For the media, they went on for weeks about how the rail strike was going to lead to economic ruin. To soon after have an environmental disaster as a result of negligent management by the rail companies while those same companies report record profits is a bad look.

Here was a post I had in the Hurricane Ian thread. Did the majority of the people in this Country know what was happening even in Ames, IA? Just because you don't hear about something, doesn't mean the gov't or even the Red Cross isn't doing something to help:

Didn't have power for a week during derecho. Didn't have water when Ames flooded in 10. Not having water really really sucked. Luckily the Red Cross had a really nice semi in a church lot that had plenty.

It’s Midwest area, or close to it, the coasts don’t care about stuff like this that happens here.

The balloons are crazy and interesting, don't get me wrong. But this is a terrible story. Another crazy thing about it is the fact that the townsfolk had just participated as extras in a movie that is about a train accident with a deadly chemical spill.
