OT - Cutting Cable

Hulu is raising its live tv price while lowering its vod services. https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/hulu-is-lowering-their-price-to-5-99-raising-the-price-of-live-tv/

$45/mon with limited hulu commercials
$50 with no hulu commercials
5.99 VOD with limited commercials
11.99 VOD for commercial free

I'm going to be removing hulu live tv in March and just go back down to regular hulu with the 0.99 promo I have (2 different email address accounts). That is unless their new UI and guide they'll be releasing blows me away. I have philo that I'll keep and will look into YTTV when they have their next 2 week or 1 month free trial.

You can still get the $5.99 one free if you have sprint for cell service.

Got a roku to try, what a piece of crap. I could not get it to stream more than 10 min of any of the games this weekend before the whole thing rebooted. Have one of the new apple tv's for my bedroom TV and that thing is rock solid. I guess there is a reason Roku is so cheap.

What roku did you get? I've heard if you've used a firetv or apple tv, you need at least the Roku 4K stick or ultra to be pleased.

I have a roku 4K stick and it's worked very well so far. Can definitely tell it doesn't have the power as the fire tv but I like the roku interface better than the firetv.

I got a premiere. Also the buttons on the bottom are stupid, make them programmable, I don't use directvnow, why would I want a button for it.

I cannot get firetv, google and amazon are acting like children so you cannot use their devices on each others services, so appletv or roku only. It is stupid. I guess I am saving over $100/mo, so I can spring for 2 more apple tv's.

That would explain the poor performance. It is a cheaper model for sure with much less horsepower than what you're use to.

I agree. I have two brand new firetv 4K sticks in the box but haven't opened them because you can't use YTTV with them which is dumb. Thats the main reason why I got the roku 4K stick was to eventually try YTTV. Would like to get apple TVs but wife won't let me spend that much $$$ on them. We have iphones so it would make sense to get the apple tv eventually. We have a new TCL roku tv in the box that I need to get set up. I'll be curious to see how that interface works on the tv.

I agree with the bottom roku buttons. The one I have has hulu, netflix and 2 others (idr them since I never used them.) I've noticed that if you use those buttons to change from netflix to hulu, the device takes a long time to switch applications. Its quicker to hit home and then select.

Edit: The roku 4K stick also has a wifi remote. Its nice but a pain at the same time. I don't have to worry about pointing the remote at the device but when my internet acts up, I can't do anything but turn on the TV. The last 6 months with CL have been awful since the floods last year - never had any issues prior.

It's a little complicated but it is possible to get YoutubeTV on a firetv device.

Yeah I just have the pro unit. I actually still use my Asus router as the DHCP server. I just turned the radios off on it. Completely rock solid 5ghz signal all over the house including the basement. Streaming to apple tv's and a samsung tv has been perfect.
I think I'm going to buy this one, but it's sold out. https://store.ui.com/products/unifi-in-wall-hd-1

In the meantime I searched for speed issues with my Netgear and found out that the channel we were on was overloaded, I switched that and bingo, I'm getting the speeds that I pay for, everyday for a week. First time ever.

I'm buying the device above to strengthen the signal to the other end of my home and giving myself 4 Ethernet ports for my smart tv, and hopefully the two other smart tvs I will install this year, along with the PS4. I'm going to just add on pieces as I need them.

I can't wait to try streaming live TV again and see if all is good. We loved PSVue when it worked right. I'm going to free trial YouTube and Sling and see how it works now.

Thanks for the tips!

Yeah, I'd like to try Youtube.tv but I'm fully invested in Amazon now. Really sucks

NOTE: This guide is about installing Smart YouTube TV app on your FireStick device. It is an alternative to the official YouTube app, which has been removed from the Amazon Store. The Smart YouTube TV app may not have all the functions and features of the original YouTube. It also does not offer access to YouTube TV (the live TV service now offered by YouTube in the select US cities).

I have one of the previous gen Roku Premier+, which I think is more or less the Ultra in the current lineup, and it's pretty much flawless in terms of streaming performance.

Amazon has the unifi in wall's in stock.

Youtube.tv is way way way better than sling. Try it first and you won't even waste your time with sling. It is flawless.

Is it easy to 'channel surf' on the roku interface?

I have the Premiere+ and the Ultra and my experience is the same, fast and flawless. I also have a first gen Roku Stick. It is slow navigating through apps, but once video starts it plays fine.

My Chromecast is another story. That thing seems very temperamental. I wouldn't recommend one of those as a primary option.

Loving youtube.tv, it is fantastic, only complaint is you don't get ch 13, you have to get the national feed and then they black out sunday night football, so I flip to antenna for that.

Is that a local DSM market thing? We get KWWL in the CR market just fine on YouTubeTV

WHO is owned by Tribune Broadcasting, who refuses to let any OTT service use their stations. They've also had plenty of fights with traditional carriers.
