OT - Cutting Cable

Directv just called, offered me choice package for 4 tv's for $99/mo for a year and then it goes to $147. He finally admitted youtube.tv is killing them for people that love sports. So pay 2x for the first year and almost 4x for the second year, for what?

Yea the math doesn’t work out at. $40 vs $99 plus having To deal with DTV, no thanks!

Have not read through this thread yet, but I will. I am going through an issue with my Condo HOA trying to eliminate Cable in favor of streaming. WTF? Maybe, it is because I am older, but I LOVE CABLE TV and have not lived in a place without cable TV hook-up options since the late 80s - when I was in the Army.

I love having all of the extra channels and channel surfing. I run across new and interesting stuff all the time that way, and it is not that expensive. I simply do not understand why the younger folks want to limit their TV viewing options. I accept the fact that this is generational, but it still baffles me.

Let's Go State! Kansas must be destroyed!

Lower cost, DVR and no contract stuff.

Lower cost, I don’t need 100 channels, DVR and no contract stuff.

Damn, I wish our condo association was that forward thinking. I hate cable packages and cable companies in general. Xfinity/Comcast can EABOD.

Apparently, that is the way of the future. I fought the good fight to not cut and cancel cable. It was bundled and only cost $30 a month! Considering mortgage, HOA fees, etc., I cannot believe people are owly about $30. Cannot wait for all of the ******** in mine, when they pull the plug. First step is cutting the channels for two years - which includes all of the ESPN + FSN Channels! When somebody cannot see the Reds or FC Cincinnati, Bowl Games, etc. without having to go to extra means, they are going to start throwing stones.

And we have the absolute crappiest guide imaginable. No logic or organization. Sports and movie channels all located willy-nilly. Basic stuff (which is all we get with our condo package) cannot be determined until you actually click to select the program on the guide - THEN it tells you it's not included in your package.

Then there are the seemingly hundreds of shopping and Spanish language channels with no way to remove them from the guide (there is no way to program or select favorites).

And just really ****** customer service. For the internet they have a seasonal option whereby you pay $8/month (used to be $5/month) for the 6 months when your not there for the privilege of NOT having to go stand in line every fall to reconnect. So basically they're saying, "Our service and brick/mortar operation is so slow and cumbersome that people will pay $8/month just so they don't have to deal with us in person." **** like that is why people hate Comcast.

Wow I just checked out their offerings. Here's what you get from YouTubeTV for $35/month:
ABC
CBS
FOX
NBC
ESPN
NBC-CSN
FOX Sports
FS1
FS2
ESPN2
Big 10 Network
SEC Network
ESPNU
ESPNNEWS
CBS Sports Network
NBC-SN
NBC-Golf

And you also get some standard cable channels as well. This package looks like the best and cheapest option for college sports fans. This wouldn't be ideal for fans of professional sports - no NFL Network, no TNT for NBA, no Fox Regional channels or MLB network for baseball.

Edit: and now I find out its too good to be true. Lots of caveats in this article. Biggest one for sports fans is that this service is prone to blackout restrictions.

My Cable TV as part of my Cincinnati Bell Bundle is only $30 a month, and the Millennials in my Condo Association are ******** about that! I get all of the channels you mentioned + 100 more. I simply do not understand the need or desire to go away from Cable TV.

Sorry to hear about that. My Cincinnati Bell service and customer service are both excellent, and it is only $30 a month as part of a bundle. The bundle which includes internet and phone (which I do not use) only costs $60 a month. So, we have to increase our internet due to the Millennials streaming, but they chose to cut the cable to keep the price the same instead of charging the internet hogs more for what they do. End of the day, why people would prefer for more fuss and fewer channels is beyond me. Why do I want to have to buy antennas, buy equipment, sign up for Vue, Sling, etc., that will not stream as fast as cable, etc. is beyond me. Bunch of unnecessary effort. IMO, having Cable TV is akin to having running water and is super easy. BTW, thank you for the feedback. I am learning much in this thread! :)

Yeah, seems like you have/had a nice setup and a good company to deal with. Back in IA our local phone/cable company is small town and easy. Walk in. No wait. They send someone out that day (except weekends :(). But the bill is quite dear. I just don't receive the value for the cost. I long for the day of a la carte so I don't support channels I don't want (Hello Big 10 network) or don't watch.

Cable conglomerates are their own worst enemies.

Because I want to watch what I want to watch, when I want to watch it, and not pay $150/mo for it. Youtube.tv does that for me. Honestly I watch about 3 shows and the rest of my viewing is sports.

$150 a month! Yikes! I understand your point. But I want to watch what I want to watch when I want to watch it too without having to jump through hoops to setup streaming services. Granted, I don't pay $150 a month either! :)

In my case, we have a $60 month internet + Cable TV + Phone bundle through Cincinnati Bell with my HOA, and the internet hogs want to upgrade the internet and cut the cable. I am OK with upgrading the internet and pay the increase to $70 a month for the bundle (even though I have no issues), but they want to cut Cable TV (which only cost $30 in the bundle) instead of paying $10 more for the extra internet they desire to stream / Facetime, etc.. My guess is that they are not going to be able to stream to get what they want for $30 a month.

In your case, I get it. In my case, it is short-sighted by the anti-cable crowd.

I would say you have it damn good cost wise. The rest of us are paying at least $50/month for internet and with DTV or cable probably at least $100+if not $150+ for almost exactly what we can get for $42 post tax through YTTV.

I paid $140 to get out of my contract with DTV back in January. I have saved about $200 since then by switching to YTTV with no change to internet. We only really lost two channels that we watched and we have filled that in with Netflix that we were already paying for but not watching a much.

That is fair! Basically, I understand all of you that have monthly expense of $100 +, but the morons in my building ARE CLUELESS! lol. I am so glad I stumbled on to this thread!

So, switching gears, if faced with having to make a decision to add all of the ESPN + FSN + All Sports + News Stations (like Bloomberg, MSNBC, CNN, etc.) stations for 3 TVs (one smart, one new but not smart + one old and dumb), which service would be the easiest to order, setup and not be a constant pain for a 50 something who really doesn't want to give up his cable but is forced to do so? :)

The $150 is for a pretty decent cable package and internet. Sad part is the next lower cable package is basically only the local channels and their .dot. counterparts. I am tempted to go there and might if I can find a streaming plan that suits us to extend the options. And is less expensive.

Seems like most of the ones I see are a mixed bag of stuff I like plus stuff I don't want to pay for. And missing stuff I do want. So, just like cable. Again, would love a la carte option.

I’d add that most cable/satellite companies charge more to set up a box for each TV...streaming avoids that nonsense as well, since you can hook up a ROKU to each dumb tv. YTTV even gives you 6 different/separate accounts I believe (we only use one as a household).

You’re also not disclosing your internet speed. If it’s Ike 10mb or less, I’d say there’s reason for revolt.

Another thing that has been nice is the ease of having YTTV on my phone and logging in at work...I mean working. During basketball games (Thursday).

I had directv with HBO and 4 tv's no other premiums. At the end after all the fees it was $147/mo.

I have found myself keeping cubs games open in a small window. I notice my kids doing it too, they keep whatever sports are going on in a small window. I love consuming it on my terms.
