OT - Cutting Cable

Is there somebody in the Ankeny area that would come out and diagnose LAN/Wifi set up? I have a NETGEAR C7000 cable modem router on Mediacom 100 down. We used to have PSVue but my speeds range anywhere from <1 to almost 100, with avg speeds in the teens. Mediacom has come out many times, but all they ever do is replace end pieces.

So either it's my set up or it's Mediacom. Since MC is incompetent, I want somebody to optimize what's in my house.

Get rid of the modem/router combo and you will be MUCH better off. I was having this exact same problem before I ditched the all in one unit.

DVRs are great and those wanting to have one while cutting the cord are understandable. However, most content is available to stream anytime, not just live. So if you can stream it on demand, you don’t need a DVR. It won’t be long before all content is available on demand and DVRs will have the same fate as the VCR. In fact, a lot of DVR services already store you’re recordings in the cloud.

I have a netgear modem with mediacom, but then run a ubiqiti wifi router. I had an all in one before, and had all kinds of wifi issues. Changed to this: https://www.ui.com/unifi/unifi-ap-ac-pro/ and the world is awesome now.

I switched to Ubiquiti router, and some of their AP's last fall and have been really happy. It was a HUGE learning curve for an amateur IT guy, but I'm very happy with it now.

Kinda like going from a bicycle to a Tesla.

Am thinking of cutting next month unless Mediacom cuts me an amazing deal to stay on. Currently have their expanded package with internet and phone for about $150/month.

We had an OTA that works great. Also use Netflix. Think we may try just that for a while and see how it goes. My kids rarely seem to watch tv anymore.

I think the only thing I will miss are the ISU replays on the Cyclone channel....

https://www.simply-tv.com this is what I use $20 a month pretty much every channel and as soon as a new movie comes out on digital they add it

Seems completely legal...

Did you just buy one of those APs? I wondered about the controller, switch, firewall, etc. This morning my internet is hitting a whopping 1.5 Mbps download...

I upgraded to a Unifi setup last fall. The only thing I changed out was my router. I went with their USG. And the AP's of course.

You do need a controller. I bought the Cloudkey. I just saw a video yesterday of a newer Cloudkey that looks intriguing. If you would rather, you can run the controller software on a computer you have running. I have a couple machine running, but opted for the Cloudykey anyway.

You don't have to have their switches or anything else. You just can't control/manage it through the Unifi software. I did not change my old switch out, though I've outgrown it now. I'm considering Ubiquiti for that, but their switches aren't cheap.

I'm a long time "tech guy" but very little experience with networking. I've had a little trouble doing everything, but my setup is working quite well now. I stumbled on Crosstalk Solutions Youtube channel. All the videos are good, but I could not have gotten my setup working if not for this video. I bet I've watched it a dozen times, if not more.

Yeah, I took your advice and hit YouTube the other day. I'm totally in on this system. I wasn't sure if I should spend the money on the controller from them or dedicate a computer. I'm with you, graduated MIS in 1998, but networking is a foggy cloud, meant the pun, for me. I'm actually in the chat queue with them right now. They obviously spend a lot of time with you as I've been waiting for 20 minutes and was only 4 deep in the queue.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but if you are thinking of streaming TV this is a relevant topic. My chat guy was not very helpful on Unifi's site.

I'm guessing that the control key and the gateway are not necessary to solve my issue. They are just nice to have so that you can see the activity in the controller right?

And I would think the AC lite would work for my ranch home. Why did you choose the Pro @brianhos or @NickTheGreat?

I replaced my dying "Wireless Router" with the Ubiquiti stuff. So I could have just used it as a router, and then the AP's. I decided it was 5 or 6 years old, so I was ready for replacement anyways.

I think you need a controller of some sort, either Cloudkey or software. I am not positive, but something needs to manage everything.

I mainly went with the Pro as it had the best specs (bandwidth and speed). It was a huge upgrade over my old one. Better speed and coverage in my house. Didn't quite do the whole house, so I put a Lite in that weak corner. It does seem to work just fine. FWIW my house is a little under 3000 ft² and is split level, making wifi coverage tough. The Pro in the basement ceiling, and Lite in the Main floor ceiling cover my house quite well. I may add another AP in one more spot, and will likely buy another Lite, unless I catch a good deal on a Pro.

I'm just not sure if my issue would be resolved by an AP or the router or what. And I want to service my two fireTVs with better wifi as there are no hardwire options because the moron that built this house was clueless or didn't care about having phone/ethernet. There isn't a single cat5 connection in any spot that you would put a tv, only coax. So for me to stream tv I have to have great wifi.

Hulu is raising its live tv price while lowering its vod services. https://www.cordcuttersnews.com/hulu-is-lowering-their-price-to-5-99-raising-the-price-of-live-tv/

$45/mon with limited hulu commercials
$50 with no hulu commercials
5.99 VOD with limited commercials
11.99 VOD for commercial free

I'm going to be removing hulu live tv in March and just go back down to regular hulu with the 0.99 promo I have (2 different email address accounts). That is unless their new UI and guide they'll be releasing blows me away. I have philo that I'll keep and will look into YTTV when they have their next 2 week or 1 month free trial.

Got a roku to try, what a piece of crap. I could not get it to stream more than 10 min of any of the games this weekend before the whole thing rebooted. Have one of the new apple tv's for my bedroom TV and that thing is rock solid. I guess there is a reason Roku is so cheap.

Yeah I just have the pro unit. I actually still use my Asus router as the DHCP server. I just turned the radios off on it. Completely rock solid 5ghz signal all over the house including the basement. Streaming to apple tv's and a samsung tv has been perfect.

Loving youtube.tv, it is fantastic, only complaint is you don't get ch 13, you have to get the national feed and then they black out sunday night football, so I flip to antenna for that.
