Official Post-Game Thread - ISU vs. SDSU

if banks does go down for the year it doesnt concern me that much considering how well LJ and TB played... plus allen bell is there on the depth chart too. still a blow though, he was layin some wood on guys

Loved Arnaud's poise...he is the starter...he managed the game real well, loved ISU's check with me no huddle...and Bates has to play, too. I think they can both play all season long, and it would be a good thing. Once Bates earns more trust.

DL did well against the run for three quarters, but I would have liked to see them dominate an FCS team more....interior DL's didn't stand out. Back 7 played very good assignment football...was impressed with the discipline of the LB's. SDSU never tested ISU downfield, so that test will come

OL was solid...not much pressure on the QB's at all, which is good. At times, dominated the line in the running game, but would like to see more of that and more consistent...give em a pass, because that first half, with all the craziness, it was hard to get into any sort of flow.

Freshmen...future is bright...

Near perfect first game save turnovers and penalties...still meat on the bone for the coaches to pick off.

Much more tomorrow

Very good assessment. My thoughts exactly.

What exactly were you hoping for in the first game with so many new guys seeing playing time.
I'll start with not 3 fumbles. And not 3 unnecessary roughness penalties. There were a lot of positives to this game, and I love walking away with a big win. But you can't beat Big XII teams with 3 fumbles and bad penalties, so I hope they learn quick.

I think AA is clearly the better overall QB. Bates has some awesome moves, but directing the team and utilizing all the strengths appears to be AA's strength. Bates appeared to me as more of a "one man" threat and not the "team threat" that AA offers.

I hope Bates accepts the backup role and is open to other positions where we can exploit his strengths. Would be a great 3rd down back (maybe short 3rd down QB), wide receiver, safety, or special teams returner. Also a trick play / decoy.

Good game. Defense bent but did not break, but still giving up like 350 yards is not good. Run defense was great though.
keep in mind that 86 came on that fluke fumble for a TD, and the 2nd string defense was in a lot of the 2nd half

still plenty of room for improvement though

That is skewed by giving up that 76 yard "run" on that fumble at the end of the game and us playing soft coverage in the 4th.

I don't know why Banks going down wouldn't concern some people. Yeah, we have CB depth, but some of that depth is true freshman. While they played well tonight, they were also facing guys that they were more talented than. Banks really seems like he could be a playmaker.

It is a huge concern because he stood out as a great player but we were also able to throw a lot of people in there and be successful

Big blow if its true but it seems as if we have a lot of depth in the secondary.
I think you're right with regard to the corners. We've still got both starters from last year (Singleton & Bell), our other starter this year (McDowell) and our studly freshman Johnson and Benton. Personally, I was very pleased with LJ's play tonight and suspect we'll see a lot more of him this year.

We are still rather thin at safety imo though. In good news there though, I've heard some good things about how Chris Brown is doing and suspect we'll start to see him again before too long.

I really hope banks is ok. He would be a huge loss. If he would be out for the year. Could he get this years elegibility back. Or would it be gone since he played

I was impressed with the crowd, tonight. 46k on a Thursday, baby. And that was mostly ISU fans. Next week is gonna be fun, Saturday afternoon football, and a full stadium.

I have to echo the sentiments of most here. Good win, but plenty to work on. Defense got a lot of picks on someone that definately wasn't looking for what he had to throw against. They answered with a pretty good drive right away in the 2nd half, but our offense answered right back. Very nice game.

Color of the SDSU uniforms, and the presence of #17 catching a bunch of balls definately brought back memories of Toledo playing us here 2 years ago. That game certainly was more interesting, but I like the results and play of this one a lot better.

I hope that he doesn't accept it, and the two keep pushing one another:yes:

Whoever said earlier that our defense can lay the wood was right on! Jesse Smith with a form tackling clinic on one of their receivers!

They may be able to lay the wood, but they still have to learn to wrap up. Way to many yards after contact. We should be used to it, as this continues to be a problem for us.

For the first time in 5 or more years, I was relaxed during field goal attempts. Great to see the field goals all go right down the middle instead of hitting the post, barely making one and missing. Granted, I think the longest was 36 yards, but that was not a gimme in the past.

It was sure nice to see fans leaving in the middle of the 4th quarter because WE were the ones doing the *** wooping for once!

Speaking of this, did anybody notice the difference in Mahoney's kicking style? Very unusual compared to traditional kickers, he drops virtually straight back three paces, rather than three paces back and three to the side.

I'm not sure he gets the same power, but I wonder if this helps with the accuracy. Certainly can't hurt the release timing either.

Great game from the true freshman kicker!
