The idea that we end up with 4x16 super-conferences completely ignores how this has been unfolding and ignores the motivation behind why the consolidation is occurring IMO.

Where would the Pac 12 teams go? For the same reason that it's tough to see where they expand, it's tough to see where one of them would leave as well.
Yep, not like any of them would leave to the central timezone. They've also got a large footprint, and provide a lot of valuable content at night. No way the pac 12 is "left out".

Completely agree. Most 4x16, 4x18 scenarios start from the top down while realignment is happening, to use a terrible buzz word, more organically. I don't really see a 4x16 scenario happening with all the conferences acting fairly independently.

I have not a lot of insight into pac 12 expansion, but looking at population bases you could see New Mexico as a potential candidate with albuquerque with 898,000 in the metro area and an enrollment of 35,000. I doubt BYU would ever get in unless there was a drast change in some schools of the pac. San Diego State maybe with 31,000 students and a large city, and a 71,000 seat stadium.

I think the Pac-12 is perfectly willing to sit tight at 12 unless they get another shot at Big 12 schools. They had to get to 12, but I don't think some of these schools (Stanford, Cal, etc.) would be big at all into adding SDSU, NM, etc.

I don't either. I don't believe we're necessarily headed to 4 16/18 team leagues. I think the Big 10 and SEC are headed for that many teams but I could easily see the Pac 12 and Big 12 staying with 12

It's possible that someone in the sports media in DC had a source in the Virginia AD. That doesn't make anything he's saying factual however.

They are why the 4x16 model won't happen.

There will be 4 respected conferences: Pac, Big 10, Big 12, SEC. The ACC will exist, but will be something less. They will squeeze a team into the playoffs every couple of years.
