With Duke's b-ball program, I can't see them being left out in the cold, unless they just decide they don't care at all about football and stay in the ACC/Big East merger with the basketball schools.

If Duke is what it takes for a conference to get UNC, any conference will take Duke. Probably the Big 10 for both.

If true, so much for the whole contiguous states crap...
By now I thought everyone had realized the only requisite stipulation is money- how may TV sets does your area bring.

this link has been updated to note that the twitter feed that started this rumor has started significantly backtracking.
Has the feel of Nebraska, reported by a member of the Big 12 and took off from there. Never was a peep out of NU until they accepted the invite.

Since business decisions seem to be driving all of this...

In business, sometimes bigger things work better, sometimes they don't. Money doesn't fix everything. One thing that seems to cause bigger things to fail is a disconnect between the values and culture of the various units that are being melded together.

I just have a real tough time seeing how Georgia Tech fits culturally within the Big Ten.

AAU and TV sets. The culture is irrelevant.

I agree, people can ruin a good business model. GT as the only Big 10 team in the South or conversely the only Southern team in the Big 10 would be bad for GT. The ACC is different, probably more so than the SEC. The Big 10 is not gentlemen enough for UNC and UVa. Those two are almost jubilant for the opportunity to chivalrously fall on their own swords rather than surrender to the Big 10.

Probably a crazy dream of mine, but I think this is the angle that could be played to get ACC teams in the Big 12. Not that we are a much better fit, but offer them their own ACC division where the aristocracy can live on.

I think we're headed for a scenario where there are two "conferences" under one bigger umbrella conference. The Big 10 for example will seperate the midwestern schools from the eastern/southern schools.

Not like this. As long as UT was in the Big 12, there was still a chance. The ACC was already weaker, and the ACC does not have that a UT.

Not like this? What has happened so far? Maryland announced they are leaving and Louisville is replacing them. They have 14 teams and are just fine.....for the moment. All this nonsense could go away and that's how the ACC will look for a few years. How quickly people forget how the Big 12 was also doomed and there was no chance it would stay together. The ACC is more stable now than the Big12 was for a long time.

I am open to such ideas, although, at best, we are several iterations away from that and I would think 3.

2 reasons why I do not completely dismiss it:
1.)Major colleges have seen the how much stable money can be generated by conference networks. It is like a nation of season tickets. If only 2 or 3 large and supremely influential conferences existed, they probably could each a get a couple channels on throughout the nation. The total T1 and T2 cash paid out by ABC/ESPN/FOX/CBS would remain constant, but with a few less teams.
2.)Post-season play in both CFB and BB. Whatever kind of exclusive post-season these leagues decided to do would be the big money maker- and they would not have to share as much, if any, with schools outside the Big 2 or 3 conferences.

Adding both Duke and NC State is what it would take to get UNC. NC politicians love their universities. Unless the Big 10 and SEC have an agreement with the UNC/NCSU presidents, those two universities won't be going anywhere.

UPDATED: Tech denies Big Ten rumors | Georgia Tech

Amidst rumors and reports that Georgia Tech has applied and been approved for membership into the Big Ten, the school denied their veracity.

“There is no truth to the rumors,” Institute spokesman Matt Nagel said in an e-mail Friday afternoon.

In his conversations with school president G.P. “Bud” Peterson, acting athletic director Paul Griffin said that Peterson “has told me there’s been no communication (with the Big Ten), nor does he expect any.”

Wednesday, on a teleconference with news media following the ACC accepting Louisville as a member, commissioner John Swofford said that the nature of conversations he had had with Peterson in the past 10 days regarding Tech’s future “has been emphatic in terms of their commitment to the ACC and Georgia Tech’s future.”

Translation: They are gone. Sounds exactly like A&M/Missouri

GO Time. They are gone. Why issue a statement at all if you were not going. Will ND be #16?

ESPN: Mr Footbasll League, we have lots of money if you can provide product for Dec. We have some dribble bowls starting mid Dec and the networks have crap holiday specials. We could pay millions if the situation would arise. Plus, if you can spread out you conference games from 15 Aug - 5 Dec, that would be a money maker, as long as we have some big names each week.

Delaney: I do not know. I like money. I like big. I might go academic type teams as our members are not very good in fball already.

Slive: I am interested if you can redo my blasted contract.

ESPN: Get back to us after you expand. We need decent games through XMAS and we have the bucks to pay. No more FBS second shots for us. We want first line name fball. The ACC and BE are getting close to negotiations. Do your magic, guys. And, oh yeah, we did not tell you any of this. That is a secret and will give you more money at the table. Ha-ha.
