All that snow will be headed down the Mississippi River soon...be prepared.

The WI River that starts close to the UP/WI border is going way up this week and will likely be at high levels for a long while until vegetation really expands.

On this day in 1999....16 tornado's struck Iowa, 2 being F4's. One of those F4's hit 4 counties in southern Iowa injuring 12 people. Farm buildings were pretty much swept of their foundations.

There were 5 people injured north of Ames when strong winds blew cars off I-35.

Almost missed it. This weekend was the 50th anniversary of the 1973 blizzard that hit Iowa. Crazy amount of snow. Linked a good recap from KCRG this weekend.

Woke up to alarm in Birch Hall that morning. Looked out the window and "Yikes", over a foot of snow and still blowing. Rolled over and went back to sleep because I knew no one was going anywhere. First time classes at ISU were ever cancelled because of weather. We pushed a dorm mates car through the snow over to Tork's and brought a keg back to the dorm which made us pretty popular that evening.

Now I wish I'd taken some photos but it was party time. ;)

My car was parked at the Memorial Union ramp. The snow drifted across about door handle height. Took a while to retrieve it.

I would expect to see more of these pop up. Numerous wildland fires have gotten out of control recently.

One of my clients burns CRP land. He was sending me pics the other day of a huge burn he was doing, meanwhile I was at home trying to not have everything blow away from the wind.

There is an idiot down the street from me on the SE side that is burning stuff today. A lot of brush and trees around him. Really hoping he gets nailed by the county.

Sad day for me. Going to miss his radio spots when he’d have all kinds of interesting Iowa weather facts/trivia. Also, just seemed like an all-around good dude.
He is a tremendous person. Texted with him some yesterday and it is hard for him to leave but will be a tremendous improvement to his quality of life. He has been on either the weekend morning or weekday morning shift for 16 years, he actually started a few months prior to graduating and would drive back from Ames on the weekends to work.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes them to fill or see what they do. I am sure that @FDWxMan can provide some more information but applications are generally down from dozens to less than ten for most positions.

Kaj is great, but I can’t blame him for getting out from a position where he has to get up at 2:30 am five mornings a week. That forensic meteorology position should have actual normal hours, and he can work from home. That’s gotta improve his life immensely.

Kaj is awesome...and another of the legendary mid-2000s Cyclone Sports Live class that included @ChrisMWilliams , @brentblum , myself, Dave Sprau, and more that Greenlee cranked out. Heyday.

Kaj was our NASCAR guy.
