Warm fronts can be especially dangerous, and notorious in Iowa for tornadoes.

This is a classic Iowa tornado day. Cloudy, cold, drizzly then the sun comes out behind the warm front at the last minute and all hell breaks loose.

Follow the front. Storms that can catch and root on the front will be particularly favored for tornadoes. Where winds are more southeasterly.

Friday when I got to work, I told the others, there won't be a tornado in Des Moines, doesn't feel right, winds are out of the southwest. Areas with surface winds out of the south, but especially southeast are going to have maximized spin, which is why the warm fronts are usually trouble.

I noticed wind out of the SE on my way back to campus this evening.

The good news is there's no tornado warnings currently.

The bad news is the threat will likely increase as we head into the evening and the temperatures start to fall. Moisture is one of the issues keeping things at bay for now.

Half dollar size hail? Who has a half dollar?

The only half dollars I've ever gotten in my life were from the gyro man, and it always went back into his tip bucket.
Pretty genius method for him and customers IMO.

Had popcorn kernel sized hail for a couple minutes in north ames when the first cell went through 45mins ago.
