***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Not when we're pretty clear to be a long ways away from being ready to be a serious contender, I'm not. Also, well above?

What is MLB average batting average?

Batting Average (AVG)

000) and one (1.000). In recent years, the league-wide batting average has typically hovered around . 250. While batting average is a useful tool for measuring a player's ability at the plate, it isn't all-encompassing.

So.... how exactly is he "well above" the league average?

He's an elite defender. And he has pop at the position. He's a very good MLB player. Never said he wasn't.

Simply said me personally, I'm not paying a lot of money for a free agent for a team that is way more than 1-2 signings away from being a serious contender.

What I personally loved most about the 2016 title was the vast majority of them were home grown or were traded for as prospects in Rizzo's case.

Then once it became clear that the core was ready to win then they were out and added a Chapman, Lester, even a Heyward. They didn't go out and spend big on Lester or Chapman. They built the foundation first, then went out and spent big. AS much as I would love to be wrong, I don't see a finished foundation just yet. The pieces are starting to be built, but since I never stopped being a Cubs fan during some incredibly crappy years, I'm good with having patience and waiting a few years and then spending big to push us over the top - not spending big to finish around .500.

If my choices are spend big and be around 500 , maybe make the playoffs but not be a true contender or suck for a few years, but down the road in a few years have an elite farm system that will give you a 5-10 year window to win, I'm going

How do you carry on a conversation when you get posts saying 4.8 war equates to an average shortstop.
How do you carry on conversation when you get posts who equate pointing out he’s an average hitter but also states elite defensively abs would rather build through the farm equals saying he’s an average overall player

Because maybe it’s just me but if you say someone is average here but elite there then that averages out to probably at least being above average based on my understanding of an elite + average metric

Unfortunately Swanson absolutely shitting the bed all August and September has led to some people thinking he’s not as great as he is. Cheap and a hell of a defender. Would like to see him be more of a consistent threat with the bat but I’ll take it

Maybe some. He’s elite defensively there’s no doubt

But this struck me as a see we’re doing something signing coupled with other moves . If we resigned everyone and went all in with Swanson , cool .

Instead we’re doing this weird halfway thing where we spend enough to not suck but not spend enough to win it all

Personally I’d rather be the Rays and Orioles than the Yankees

Here's how I view/rate our young pitching that's still under team control.

1,2 Steele Horton. Forgetaboutit
3,4 Alzolay, Assad only available if centerpiece for elite.
5. Brown, elite talent (w/ 1,2) wouldn't discount due to injury
6. Wicks, open for business. Sell high.
7. Little, he's what we're trying to develop. Have to be blown away to deal.
8. Ferris, heard great things. To early to part with
9. Wesneski. Make me an offer please.

@ISUCubswin curious where you stand.

Agree on all of it except Wicks. He profiles as a 3/4 that eats a ton of innings and that's incredibly valuable for a good team.

I like him, I think he's more of a depth guy and not sure he can duplicate what he did this year. I think he must of been tipping the change up. It was his Wipeout pitch early to not so much later.

@1UNI2ISU where would you rank him on your list?

I stick him above Brown because there's no reliever risk there. He's a definite starter and I worry that Brown isn't.

According to baseballtradevalues.com, Horton, Morel, Wicks, and Alcantara are just enough to get Witt.

However, the Royals have been pretty open about wanting to find a way to make sure they never let him leave KC. And I'm not sure I'd even give up Witt for that.

I'd like to think we could get a 2025 rotation in which Horton and Steele are fighting with each other for the #3/last rotation spot in the postseason to be a statement on just how good the 1 and 2 are.

Not including bullpen help you're talking about adding two starters and one bat. I think I'd prefer one pitcher and two bats.

I like to use this site to dink around and see fair and/or reasonable trades.

I bring this up as Bleacher Nation brought up the idea of the Mets possibly trading Alonso if Yamamoto goes anywhere else. So I checked in on what Morel for Alonso straight up would look like, and because of Alonso's $22 MM projection and just 1 year, the analyzer says the Mets would fleece the Cubs if that trade were done straight up.

A comp for Alonso, per that site, would be Wesneski or Mervis.
