***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Best FA fits, sure. I'd rather see us make a deal with our glut of prospects for a big bat over Hoskins. But I don't know which direction I'd go for that.
I'm ok on trading some prospects, as long as they aren't our elite prospects. I just hate giving away assets for rentals and I'm not seeing trades that get us long term pieces.

Another potential FA I wouldn't totally hate - Justin Turner, 1 year, $12 MM.

Projections have him hitting between .260-.270, 15-20 dongs. Can mentor 1B/3B. Evidently is close with Craig Counsell. Allows you to figure out what position you need to get a superstar for in 2025.

Laughable he's being a team player by deferring a substantial portion of the 700 till the contract expires. Basically wants them to remain competitive while he's there. When he's gone Dodgers still on the hook for 350 mil (only a guess) that will hamstring the team for over a decade.

Yeah I was going to be really upset if we didn’t get him cause we were too cheap but that contract is just pure insanity for a DH that has no guarantee to be the pitcher he was. And I really wanted him but that is just ridiculous

I think the next big decision is the starter they sign. Option A. Japanese player that's unproven at this level. Option B. Snell or Montgomery both 31 to a 4 or 5 year deal.

If you can do this spend some farm capital to get Bichette for 2 years. (Caissie, Wicks) seems about fair. Bichette is estimated at 11 mil next year so spend 25 on Bellinger. Give Morel a shot at 1st.

Will be interesting tonsee how this affects Bellinger's market. I don't want to see the Cubs panic and sign him.tonsome stupid deal, let the Giants do that. I'm not sold that he continues to produce at the level he did this year. I dont want to overpay for Chapman at 3B either. Maybe the move is find opportunity in the trade market and acquire a good bat with multiple years left and spend some of the prospect capital. Spending on free agent pitching seems to be the better use of money now as there isn't much value for position players unless you pay for a prove it deal or 3 years or less

Committing to Morel at 3B or 1B and waiting out PCA Canario and Shaw development may be the smart move. Can still piece a playoff competitive team with some value moves but if 2025 is the all in year there is a lot of prospects that should be ready by then that could fill some needs at a much lower cost and can spend big to fill in the rest of the holes in the roster.

Have the Benny Hill music ready if Morel plays 1B. I think it would be a joke.

I realize Happ won a Gold Glove last year in LF but I think he could make the transition to 1B. We have a logjam of OF on the horizon and guys are going to need some AB’s. I’m also not giving up on Mervis just yet.

I wouldn’t mind trying Happ at 1B. I like Happ but as I and some national media believe, Happs Gold Glove says more about the quality of play in LF than it does Happs defense.

Only concern is, at 6’0”, he’d be on the really short end of first basemen. We had Matt Stairs at 5’9” in 2001 but haven’t had a first basemen shorter than 6’2” since.

Other concern is I hate the idea of handing the CF full-time keys to PCA to start the year given his performance to end last year and having another question in the outfield, along with Suzukis questionable defense, could lead to trouble

It's completely unfair to judge PCA on anything from the end of the year since Davey did absolutely nothing to set him up for success. 'Here kid, go time a fastball when you only get an AB every 3rd day in a high leverage situation.'

He may end up needing some more time in Des Moines but you've also got Tauchman around if you need to bridge a gap.

Every facet of his game turned sketchy when he got to the bigs. He really needs more time.

Don’t disagree - for clarity, I’m not saying PCA isn’t the future CF (I absolutely think he is)

However, you are not building a playoff roster if you go into the season saying a kid who went 0-19 in his first taste is going to automatically be our starter.

Give him time to learn the ropes and not feel the pressure of having to perform every day. Build his confidence, let him show he can handle it, then in 2025, let him man it alone.

I'm in the minority but I actually don't need them to build a playoff roster. I just want a well built roster and development. But then again I'm old fashioned in that I prefer farm system and international FA and a more supplemental approach to free agents then going out and splashing cash
