It makes sense though, the goal is to win the group, thus overall performance through all 3 games means more than winning any one game.

I get this sentiment, but counting yellow cards isn't the same as counting fouls. It's not a perfect tie-breaker, but I'm ok with it. Since most teams will accumulate a couple strategic yellows, I think this essentially penalizes the more reckless team.
The absence of striker(s) hurt Mexico and Denmark. Mexico could have used Vela or Chicarito. Denmark don't have quality strikers (Braithwhite, Poulsen and Cornelius are not good enough) and they benefited from a soft group during qualification
Shocked they didn’t bring Vela. Big whiff there imo. Also needed him on my former Arsenal starlet bingo card.
The way teams are grouped in the World Cup isn't similar to any other sport. And, even then, yellows are different than something like "too many men on the field". Think of it more like an intentional foul in basketball or an unsportsmanlike conduct in football versus common fouls. Even then, the context is different.
It's too tough to compare soccer to another sport. That's why so many people hate on soccer.
So we just need to beat the Netherlands, Argentina, Brazil and France? Piece of cake.
I think the reality is that once you get past 1 or 2 tie breakers it's going to be dumb no matter what you do.
Anyone optimistic that we can beat the Dutch? I think we have a chance. The Dutch has been really slow - seems they are overthinking right now (trademark Louis Van Gaal's style at Man United) and with our speed, we could make life difficult for them.
I know it's supposed to be like kangaroos, but seeing it typed out I can only think of scotcheroos.
Probably a long shot, but I hope the USA plays Messi. That would just be awesome to watch.
