Notebook: Rhoads mum on QB situation

JB wasn't in the mix at the beginning of the season last year, but by mid-season was apparently our best option.

So there's a precedent for this sort of thing.

My preference for Saturday is to see JB start, and us show some commitment to the run game, and not abandon it if we go down a score or two. The best defense against Baylor is to keep their offense off the field and burn clock when we have the ball.

If we try to get match pace in a shoot out, no matter how much their D sucks, we're going to lose, and I'll have no more faith in Mess.

Whoa whoa whoa, you just take those fancy 'facts' of yours and get on out of here.....

I'd rather see Jantz than Barnett at this point. Our defense can handle a couple interceptions if that's what it takes for our offense to score points. Barnett hasn't been able to hit the broad side of a barn.

I just wish we had White back, we're missing him bigtime right now. Especially his abilities as a receiver.

I agree with this... I can't take anymore 48% completion... it kills our offense every bit as bad as turnovers IMO...

If Lenz AND White come back this weekend, I see Barnett as our starter, but on a short leash. The last time these three played together (correct me if i'm wrong) was the TCU game and things ran according to plan. White, at least, gave us a decent rushing attack (IMO, Shontrelle dances more than he should) and Lenz is veteran enough to know how to get open. If things go downhill quickly, SR had better be ready.

As for SJ...clipboard coordinator.

Hard for me to imagine JB not getting the start unless SJ just has an outstanding week of practice. We clearly need to focus on the run game and JB does a better job. Plus, he has started out well in the first Q/half of all three games against TCU, KSU and OSU. His issues tend to show up later once our run game starts getting shut down.

Like everyone, have no idea on SR, but the season is still only half done, not a good time to change to a 3rd string QB with a winnable game unless SR is really, really ready.

But I would rather see SR than watch any more of SJ panic mode.

Edit: I still like this team for 7-5.

God I'm sick of this excuse. When players screw up in one game its their fault. When they repeatedly don't perform in the same (even predictable) ways across multiple games, the blame belongs to the coaches.

Isn't it Messingham who prepares these kids to play. Shouldn't he teach them how to catch the ball, or make a read/block. Shouldn't he teach them the system in ways that enables them to remember it, or change it if they cannot.

When every item on the menu tastes bad the responsibility belongs to the chef, not the ingredients.

We didn't score only 10 points because of Messingham. He has a lot of issues but I'd rank them fairly far down on our list of issues. I doubt he calls plays like "Dropped pass", "Missed block", or "Terrible read". There were a whole lot of plays that were a bad pass away from being 1st downs. There were also a whole lot of plays that were stone hands by the receiver away from being a first down.

Jantz has the capability to single-handedly lose a game in the 1st quarter. I think our best bet is JB to start, hopefully get the running game going and rely on the defense. If we fall behind late throw Jantz in there to try and make some throws, because at that point it doesn't really matter if you're forcing throws.

The wildcard in all of this is SR. If he's truly ready, this week is probably the best chance given the circumstances(home, poor defense) to give him a start to see what he can do with the lights on.

Either way, we can't abandon the running game so fast. I know what you are all thinking but @ OSU we averaged 4.7 ypc. We ran 22 times and threw 39. Seems like a lot of throws for a guy that "can't make the throws". We can run the ball effectively as long as its not a zone read half or more than half the time. Its easy to predict when we are going to run it. If fans know, the D certainly does. You don't have to throw just because its 2nd and 8 or 9. And you don't have to run zone read every time you get a first down and the first play of every game. Its a tendency that is easy to predict/stop for the D.

Jantz also has the ability to win games for us late in the game.

We should start Jantz. He's had one bad game this year, and its against the same team that shut down Geno Smith. Barnett hasn't played well either.

Jantz is the man to finish the year, and Rohach is the future.

Maybe on the future, though I still believe SR will be in the mix next year.

I can agree with this. Although I think Richardson will battle Rohach.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again..... Most important trait that a QB can possess is the ability "to win games". That is why (personally) I have been a big SR fan.

I hope you meant to say SJ, because SR hasn't proven anything as far as winning games at the collegiate level. I'm just tired of all the flip-flopping between QBs and hope that one guy emerges in the spring as the go-to guy for next fall. If not spring, at least through the summer and by the early part of camp. The lack of consistency at QB can certainly affect the consistency and flow of the other offensive players.

Yeah, I gotta agree with you on that. As much as I would love to see what Richardson can do, it will be a nightmare if he starts and is worse than SJ and JB.

If he starts, then that is a true sign of desperation by this coaching staff IMO. It means they are to the point of trying to find any kind of spark that might work. Throwing things against the wall to see what sticks? And if Richardson starts, then I'd be a little nervous for my job at the end of the season if I were Messingham too. If the head coach needs to turn to his 3rd string QB who was never really in the picture to play this year, then he's given up on this offense for the most part and is just hoping that he will find lightning in a bottle or something?

Disagree. At the beginning of the season, all things being equal, you go with experience. Seven games in, the new guy surely has learned a lot. And if the experience isn't panning out, the tie now goes to the young guy.

Two bad games. At this point we have very little to suggest SJ will play well against BCS-level opponents.

Both QB's are lacking in several areas. Give me JB due to Jantz's happy feet and ability to completely kill the zone-read. Jantz more negatively impacts the OL and RB's performances.

Gimmie Jantz or Richardson. Barnett is only a RS Soph.....but he's still just not ready

What?? You'd rather have a redshirt freshman, who hasn't played a snap against big 12 competition who in your eyes seems "more ready" than Barnett? When Barnett has the biggest win in school history and the only quarterback on roster to get a win over a big 12 team. Your opinion makes zero sense to me.

With that being said, I expect to see Richardson start on Saturday, BUT I still feel JB gives us the best chance to win. People get in funks sometimes, I think he may be in a funk right now
