Notebook: Rhoads mum on QB situation

Not really. It is likely that the Richardson of 10/24 is not the same one they saw in Fall Camp. Very plausible that Sam is in the high-growth stage that in 2.5 months he went from not being ready to earning an opportunity to see what he can do in live-action.

Also, the staff loses no more credibility by trying something different, than they would if they kept on doing the same but expecting different results.

Exactly 2.5-3 months can be extremely helpful just ask Jeremiah George. Jeremiah had the physical talent but it didn't start clicking mentally until this past Spring/Summer. The Coaches, CW, AA have all noticed that SR throwing abilities are greater than Barnett's (not sure about SJ's). In fall camp the only thing that made SJ & JB the contenders for the starting spot was the mental part IMO.

SR should be considered because JB & SJ have their shortcomings, neither is a complete QB.

SJ has decent passing abilities but poor decision making.
JB has decent decision making abilities but poor throwing.

Nebraska also had an offensive line that could sustain blocks. Our running backs are getting greeted by the defense 2 yards behind our line of scrimmage. That would be a whole lot of sacks.

I want to see our offensive line get mean and nasty. Get ****** off and take someones head off. That is what it is going to take to run the ball.

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!

FWIW:

ISU's offense averaged 4.6 ypc against Ok St last week.
NU averaged 4.5 ypc against us in 2010.

Personally, I'm just getting tired of not knowing who is going to start the game at quarterback or knowing whether or not they will get pulled in a game. I'm all for position battles in the offseason or early on, but I'm not at all a fan of a quarterback battle that lasts this far into the season. It has to be hard for either of these guys to build confidence because I'm sure they're scared to mess up because they know that the next guy may come in at any time instead of taking the mistake and learning from it. For example in the game last week, personally I would have rather seen Barnett stick out the end of the game and use it as a learning opportunity instead of throwing Steele in at the end. The quarterback needs to be the leader of the offense and its hard to be a leader when even your coaches are constantly second guessing you. Just my two cents.

I thought Barnett was pretty slow to get up on one of his last drives. At the time, I wasn't sure if he was taken out because he wasn't at 100% or just see what SJ could do. Even if he was ok, he still looked like he might be done.

I guess I am waiting for SR to come in, lead to a convincing victory against baylor, and have a huge let down against Oklahoma. So the saga of ISU's QB continues and fans are back her again.

wait, where is Rhoads mum's comments at?

:jimlad:

Barnett will start this weekend I bet

When I piece together what I'm hearing from Rhoads, I think we will be going back to the repetitive quick bubble screens. Remember how he talked after the Tulsa game of wanting to get extra yards on that play. I look for us to go back to it this week. It is easy for the QB to throw, puts the onus on WRs to block, and takes some of the burden off the O-line. Once things get opened up a bit, then I expect to see the RBs doing more up the middle. Not really looking for much on the deep throws, other than a few just to keep them honest, but would be delighted if they go for TDs or big gains.

If Lenz AND White come back this weekend, I see Barnett as our starter, but on a short leash. The last time these three played together (correct me if i'm wrong) was the TCU game and things ran according to plan. White, at least, gave us a decent rushing attack (IMO, Shontrelle dances more than he should) and Lenz is veteran enough to know how to get open. If things go downhill quickly, SR had better be ready.

As for SJ...clipboard coordinator.

I'd rather see Jantz than Barnett at this point. Our defense can handle a couple interceptions if that's what it takes for our offense to score points. Barnett hasn't been able to hit the broad side of a barn.

I just wish we had White back, we're missing him bigtime right now. Especially his abilities as a receiver.

This is exactly what I was thinking, I think having White in gives us more options not just for the run game, but for the passing game as well. He could have been key against KSU and I don't think OSU's defense has a field day with our offense with him in either.

1. I didn't know the Rhoads family was British

2. I don't see how her comments warrant an entire thread.

3. Lady needs to back off and let her kid do his job.

Jantz should be the QB. If he struggles, and they think Richardson is ready... insert him.
Except Jantz throws to one set of buddies and JB to another bunch. If SJ and White start, he needs to throw lots to White. Even deep down the field....

Barnett has the arm of an 8th grader. I wish it was better because he does control the offense better (especially the zone read) and it seems the team responds better around him. But we need someone who can throw the ball more than 10 yards with some actual velocity, which Jantz can do.

And Jantz has the game day mental stability of an 8th grader. I would rather see Barnett.

Actually, what I'd most like to see is someone else calling the plays. I think Messingham has lost whatever stuff he had. There was absolutely no discernible strategy last week. It was like he was pulling plays out of a hat.

We didn't score only 10 points because of Messingham. He has a lot of issues but I'd rank them fairly far down on our list of issues. I doubt he calls plays like "Dropped pass", "Missed block", or "Terrible read". There were a whole lot of plays that were a bad pass away from being 1st downs. There were also a whole lot of plays that were stone hands by the receiver away from being a first down.

While Richardson may end up being the best option, starting him at this point just leads to a loss of credibility with the coaching staff. Why wasn't he more in the mix during the beginning of the season?

If Richardson starts or plays a significant amount you know the coaching staff is really given into just hoping something sticks in an effort to save the season.

JB wasn't in the mix at the beginning of the season last year, but by mid-season was apparently our best option.

So there's a precedent for this sort of thing.

My preference for Saturday is to see JB start, and us show some commitment to the run game, and not abandon it if we go down a score or two. The best defense against Baylor is to keep their offense off the field and burn clock when we have the ball.

If we try to get match pace in a shoot out, no matter how much their D sucks, we're going to lose, and I'll have no more faith in Mess.
