Notebook: Rhoads mum on QB situation

Would we be helped by running more wildcat plays?

A few years ago, Nebraska used Burkhead so well against us when they didn't have a QB they could rely on.

Nebraska also had an offensive line that could sustain blocks. Our running backs are getting greeted by the defense 2 yards behind our line of scrimmage. That would be a whole lot of sacks.

I want to see our offensive line get mean and nasty. Get ****** off and take someones head off. That is what it is going to take to run the ball.

So it's officially a QB "situation", huh? That's never good.

While Richardson may end up being the best option, starting him at this point just leads to a loss of credibility with the coaching staff. Why wasn't he more in the mix during the beginning of the season?

If Richardson starts or plays a significant amount you know the coaching staff is really given into just hoping something sticks in an effort to save the season.

Thats what this QB competition in the middle of the season is telling me, which by most accounts is not good.

It just makes me sick to think about how horrible the offense on this team is. I know it goes far beyond the QBs, but it is pretty hard not to point fingers at guys that can't hit a wide open guy 15 yards down field or that drill a pass into the ground 10 yards short. SJ throws to many INTs and JB is so inaccurate that even the DBs can't get to his throws. It is pretty hard to give up and throw in Richardson when the defense is playing good enough to win games it the offense will just do something.

Richardson might have picked up on the offense a little better in the last few months. You never know. Besides, practice is a little different than a live game.

True, but other QB's in this conference practice well but perform well during the game ours are the opposite expain that.

They play in games with thousands of people screaming and seeing a different defense as well and everything else that comes with live games.

Personally, I'm just getting tired of not knowing who is going to start the game at quarterback or knowing whether or not they will get pulled in a game. I'm all for position battles in the offseason or early on, but I'm not at all a fan of a quarterback battle that lasts this far into the season. It has to be hard for either of these guys to build confidence because I'm sure they're scared to mess up because they know that the next guy may come in at any time instead of taking the mistake and learning from it. For example in the game last week, personally I would have rather seen Barnett stick out the end of the game and use it as a learning opportunity instead of throwing Steele in at the end. The quarterback needs to be the leader of the offense and its hard to be a leader when even your coaches are constantly second guessing you. Just my two cents.

Yeah, I gotta agree with you on that. As much as I would love to see what Richardson can do, it will be a nightmare if he starts and is worse than SJ and JB.

If he starts, then that is a true sign of desperation by this coaching staff IMO. It means they are to the point of trying to find any kind of spark that might work. Throwing things against the wall to see what sticks? And if Richardson starts, then I'd be a little nervous for my job at the end of the season if I were Messingham too. If the head coach needs to turn to his 3rd string QB who was never really in the picture to play this year, then he's given up on this offense for the most part and is just hoping that he will find lightning in a bottle or something?

I know the Oline is worse, but I don't see a big difference between throwing SR in this year and JB last year. IIRC, JB's first start as a RS Frosh was against TTU last year when we tore them a new one on the road.

Herman said that SR was the man. Herman is a genius, just ask him.

That's reality, not a sign.

Well....yeah. You've been watching this season, right? I think OSU was the obvious proverbial last straw for Rhoads. OSU's defense is nothing to write home about.....up until then, our offense had been facing what you could consider to be stout defenses. When the offense couldn't move the ball effectively against what should have been an overmatched OSU secondary, it's time for some serious re-evaluation of all offensive positions starting with the QB.

I looked at the roster and I'm sad to say I haven't heard of most of our QB's It looks like we may have the same situation going forward as we do now. I have never seen Bueker or Gent play and have never heard of Horbach or Rohach. Richardson is the only one I know so he must be light years ahead of the other guys??

I wish this was like the state fair carnival and we could trade three bad prizes for one medium prize.

I agree, though I might start with the O-line. Whichever guys can fire out and block on run plays, occasionally getting to the second level block, that's who starts. The rush average needs to go up a ton for us to win games. Whichever QB can work in the run game the best, and still pass occasionally to keep them honest, that's who starts. Make Baylor commit 8 to the run and then pass over the top. Win time of possession, play good D, run the football, block. A healthy Woody, Lenz and White wouldn't hurt... Go State!

bykowski hasnt looked all that bad at left tackle. farniok has looked good. burris and the rest of the guys have been a disappointment. i think we see more of bundrage this week if lenz is a no go. he looked decent last week. that first catch was a tough one but he pulled it in anyways. i wonder if hammerschmidt could be an option on the o-line since he hasnt seen much time at TE other than in blocking situations

This.

Theres been several instances where the backup came in and ended up being better at ever level of football. If those guys played better in games, why did they never win it before hand in practice?

Not really. It is likely that the Richardson of 10/24 is not the same one they saw in Fall Camp. Very plausible that Sam is in the high-growth stage that in 2.5 months he went from not being ready to earning an opportunity to see what he can do in live-action.

Also, the staff loses no more credibility by trying something different, than they would if they kept on doing the same but expecting different results.

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!!
