Not a bad loss at all

ISU coming up bricks while UNI couldn't miss from NBA range. A number of phantom fouls in that second half. ISU's first game with Burton and with no Naz. The fact it came down to a last second shot should actually encourage all of us. UNI is a good team and a lot of teams in the country would lose (by a much larger margin) with that shooting performance. I would have preferred more emphasis on getting in the paint as UNI had zero answer instead of shooting some of those 3's. That's really my only complaint. @ Cincinnati will be tough.

Yes it was! While UNI is a good team imagine how UNI would do against the BIG 12. Kansas, OK State, OK, Baylor, Texas Tech. UNI would be at the bottom of the conference which we will be 5th or 6th unless we figure out how to play defence and get stops.

First off, we are a team that shoots a large % of three points shots. At present, except for AN and MM our 3 pt% is great. Matt, the current whipping boy here who some say needs to sit more is shooting 43.5% from three, not too shabby. IMO part of the reason we are so effective inside is the talent of Miang to drive and JM's improved post game.
a thing a lot of people miss is that part of the reason for the effectiveness iof the inside game is room to operate. Picture George's trying to drive against a tight zone or McKay having to pass out of a double team. This space is created by our ability to take and make outside shots. Niang's ability to drive is partially due to his outside shooting.
We need to clean some things up but we can be pretty good. If we hit some outside shots, we'll usually win. If not it will be close or we'll lose especially on the road. Not much of a clairvoyant but seems to be that's the way it is.
To repeat from previous posts I made post game, I thought UNI was very well coached (maybe exceptionally) and a lot more talented than we are willing to give them credit for. Washpun is a stud, quick, strong and makes good decisions. The other players are put in position by their offense and fundamentals to take advantage of their skills. Most of their players are limited in some areas or they would be high major. They are put in a position to succeed by their sets.

Good points. The other team's players are on scholarship too and their coach is really pretty good. Sometimes 9-1 means something is working really well. If we were the Hawks we'd just call out a soft schedule.

Losing to a mid major is never a good loss. UNI is abetter loss than most mid majors, but still is extremely disadvantaged compared to a Wayne Morgan ISU team, let along this 2015 top 10 team.

I know its UNI's super bowl and only chance to impress the committee but still...

lol. Man one loss really sets this board into a frenzy. With a #5 ranking this game will likely only be the third highest ranking UNI faces this non con schedule.

We lost, it's disappointing but no where close to a bad loss. Just need to deal with it.

This team is not a top ten team, at least not in this part of the season. They need to stop playing street ball and learn some discipline, which comes from the coach. they need to learn how to put away a team in the first few minutes of the game and not wait until the last few minutes of the game. When that happens, then they could be a TOP 10 team.

The team will not be awesome, until they can learn to control the game from start to finish. That takes discipline and right now they don't have it. They didn't have an off night, they have off nights every other game. Wait till they get into conference play and see how many off nights they have. They need to learn how to control the game!!!!!!!

Yes it is a bad loss. Not sure why people think it's not? They got beat by 20 points to New Mexico people. They aren't that good. ISU has been struggling but winning so one of these games was bound to happen. I just hope that this team can learn something from it to get better.

Please don't make this fan base look like the degenerates to the east by using stupid hyperbole's like that one.

It always makes me shake my head when ISU fans treat UNI in the same exact way that Iowa fans treat ISU. I wonder if they are even aware of the irony when they do so.

Besides, UNI is 6-2 in their last 8 games against ISU, with both losses in overtime. Maybe ISU needs to start treating the game against UNI as their Super Bowl.

FIFY.

Every one of UNI's players were "lesser" recruits than ISU's. If that is not a bad loss, I am not sure what is. Yeah, they beat UNC without their best player with a home crowd. Same can be said with them as well but even that favored UNI more than it did against ISU because most of the fans were clearly ISU fans. People say UNI shot out of their minds which is true, so how about some adjustments. Overplay the perimeter and force them to make plays inside. Play 4 guards if necessary but there is no reason their shooting guard is allowed to make 7 three pointers, mostly uncontested.
The most infuriating aspect of this game was the fact, we were very effective down low and instead of sticking with what works, we think we need to match them three for three and clearly were not hitting the shots. Its one thing to let Thomas, Cooke and Niang take open looks, but Nader, Burton and even Morris should have searched out better options before settling on those shots, especially when the team was down. ISU was also effective in drawing the fouls, could have gotten Washpun in foul trouble earlier if they just took it to him over and over again.
I thought this team would learn after the Iowa game debacle but didn't as evident with their game against APB. Maybe a loss here will bring them in and realize they can't take short cuts. They need to do what is working and stick with it and not let up. My fear is that this team is just a top 25 team (5-6 seed) which is not the end of the world.

The thing is, I really don't think ISU took UNI lightly, at least they shouldn't have. There was an article on this site before the game where Georges was quoted, after seeing UNI beat UNC in person, that ISU was going to have to bring their "A" game to win (which he did minus the turnover at the end). I think UNI's hot shooting from the outside may have left ISU a bit shell-shocked in the first half, and maybe launching all the threes (and hitting very few of them) was the only way for us to catch up on the scoreboard, even when scoring from the post was more effective.

I get what you mean, but at the same time, that's why they play the game, right? The number of stars next to your name lose a lot of importance once the game starts. UNI under Jacobson has made a regular habit of beating teams with more talent, even within the same conference (see Wichita State and even Creighton with Doug McD a few years ago). That's why they call them upsets, and not every upset can or should be considered a "bad" loss.

It never really got so out of hand that launching threes was necessary. Even though we were incredibly effective from two, I can understand why we still took a few threes. Some of it was undoubtedly impatience, and some was probably the normal urge to answer a three with a three, but I'm not terribly unhappy with the number of threes we took, as it looks to be about 6 less than our season average, which shows that we were at least aware of where we should be going.
