new 'broken cy' tee

Not sure why everyone is getting bent out of shape over this, but not over the shirt that says "beli3ve" with an obvious picture of 3sus after this shot against OSU.

Pretty sure you could buy the #52 jersey's before last football season.

Jersey's have always been okay' as long as the school is selling the team jersey without a name on it. I don't believe you could walk into cys locker room two years ago and get them to put the name Knott on there. The University owns that design and every four years a new player wears that number.

In this case, the badage makes it tough to make that same argument on this shirt.

People wear bandaids and walking boots all the time, that could be anyone.

Unless Georges okayed it? NCAA rules do not permit any currently enrolled student-athlete’s name or likeness to be utilized in conjunction with the sale of a commercial product when the student-athlete in question has eligibility remaining.
Such use is classified by the NCAA as non-permissible promotional activity, and it can jeopardize the eligibility of the involved student-athlete.

I wasn't saying "okayed" in the "yeah it's ok to use my likeness as long as I get my cut" sense. More of a "Hey Georges, whattya think of this shirt? Are you ok with us obviously using your injuries to promote the selling of this shirt" kinda way. To which Georges shrugs, pumps his fist, and finishes his lunch that was just interrupted.

I will never claim to know NCAA regulations, but please feel free to correct me for violating them on a message board.

Heck this Cy could be me back in school. Shooting hoops at the Rec after a rough night at the Lost and Found Lounge.

That isn't Georges number. That's Iowa State's number that he's currently using

It's probably just a coincidence that they choose the numbers of very popular players to put on the jersey's they sell for a given year.

A "31" and a band-aid over the right eye. I highly doubt that this breaks any NCAA rules. There are no likenesses involved whatsoever.

If the NCAA has no beef with jersey sales (and the only controversy was the NCAA website was selling them), which is a hell of a lot closer to likeness than this T-shirt is, they can't have a beef with this.

I really don't like the thought of college athletes getting paid because I feel like it will hurt Iowa State, but it's these things that help change my mind. I think it's a clever t-shirt, but they're making money off of George's injury and he isn't getting a dime. It even has his number on it!

My guess is that ISU AD is footing the bill for the surgery, rehab, etc.

If these t-shirt sales come even to a fraction of that cost - then there may be an issue there.

1 - Those were suggestions by a third-party site and clearly were not licensed.

2 - They had no ISU trademark on them so wouldn't be licensed.

3 - ISU would never approve it.

Didn't the controversy also involve being able to search for a player's name and be directed straight to their jersey (e.g., searching "manziel" would direct to you aTm #2), and thus removing the facade of "oh, aTm #2 is a star player...how 'bout that...guess we picked a good number for this year's fan jersey..."?
