New 2011 Scholarship Offer

The Adam Koch thing is my opinion. I agree that teams need role players. WE ARE NOT GETTING SUPERSTAR OR GO TO PLAYERS! That is a problem

My only point of contention is the statement you made that “Koch would be eaten alive in the Big 12.

Yeah you can have your opinion. Just like a sect of peeps who refer to themselves as "flatlanders". They have the opinion and believe that the Earth is flat. Just like your statement, sometimes opinions have no basis in fact.

Eaten alive was a little strong. He would probably scored about 11ppg for us. I see only 4-5 teams he would even make the roster for in the conference. In fact I don't think UNI breaks 500% in the big 12 conference.

Dean's nephew.

That means that he is probably Ed's son. Ed Uthoff was about 3 or 4 years younger than Dean and also played BB at CR Jefferson while I was there in the late 70s. I don't believe that Ed played any ball in college - if he did it was definitely not Div 1. Ed was about 6'8 if I remember correctly.

Remember when we use to recruit against the power schools?
Yeah, I remember how Barnes, Kirk, Collison, Haluska, Oliver, Horner, etc all had offers from the KU's and UNC's before ISU had offered. You do realize the kid is just for the class of 2011, right?

It's no wonder why we suck so bad!!!! I do remember when we used to recruit big time players. Adam Koch would get ate alive in an 18 game big 12 season. sorry
Koch could never match up with Brackins.

I heard all this about Jordan Dykstra.
Again, it seems you are not familiar with his age. He is 16, and going to be a senior, not a 13 year-old freshman to be.

I'm surprised I have never heard of this guy. Iowa high school basketball is a small world. For most D-I recruits, you have at least heard of them by this point in their careers, such as Marsden, Thompson, Haluska, Horner, Brunner, Gatens, etc.
You have not heard of him? Can't help those who are not listening. Also, a reason why everyone had heard about Horner, oliver, Haluska is because they got offers. At the very least he has gotten more pub than Homan and Brunner.

But I can't help but agree with those who are concerned about our recruiting. I'm not trying to bag on this kid, because he has time to develop. However, until we are competing with Top 50 programs on a regular basis for recruits, we will be struggling to make the postseason just about every year.
How do we know if he will not be a top recruit? Also, Paige, Staten, Randle, Cook (commit), essentially everyone we are after has at least one Top 50 program after them. Uthoff has offers from ISU and Creighton, two programs imo that are top 50.

Dean definitely played college ball...

Jarrod is Ed's son and Ed is Dean's younger bro.

Really? I would say that's doing pretty damn good

I'm sorry, but we are not going to get anywhere beating out Albany and Creighton for recruits. This is how we got in this mess to start with. We gave out scholarships to kids that weren't Big 12 players, and after a year or so they realize that and walk...this creating no continuity and chemistry. I'm glad to see the staff has learned from their mistkaes, reaching for lower D1 talent, hoping they can mold them, and realizing relatively quickly they aren't Big 12 talent.

For those that following recruiting please comment on which player had the better skill set at the time they finished their junior year: Doug McDermott or Jarrod Uthoff?

If you think it is Doug McD, I would be curious to know why Jarred recieved the offer rather than Doug (or perhaps Doug did as I don't follow recruiting that closely)? Is Jarrod's upside that more tangible? Different skill sets?

Hmm, good question. Too far removed from Doug's junior year for me to properly answer that. I'm too used to the current Doug, which is a complete stud. I can say with almost certainty however that Uthoff is more athletic than Doug is right now. Uthoff dunks with ease. Reverses, put-backs, one handers, etc.

I would call anyone with offers from Albany and Creighton projects at the Big 12 level.

If I remember right the Albany coach has some kind connection as they recruited Zach Bohannon, and Matt Bohannon.

He is open enrolled at Jefferson from Iowa Valley to get more exposure.

I think thats right. Going back a little further Brian Lillis from Dowling went there too.

Who had offered Jon Leuer or Tyler Zeller when we did? I'm not saying Uthoff will blow up like they did, but I can't discount the kid at this point.

Come to the good guys Jarrod! And don't pay any attention to the whiners on this board. Dean Uthoff was a senior my freshman year. Any body else old enough to remember yelling "YUTE! YUTE!"? IIRC he played some pro ball in Australia. If Jarrod can put on muscle like Dean plus has the skills people say, he could be very good.

Doug is a big 12 tweener...4
Jarrod is a 3

Not even close to the same type of player, other than they can both shoot it.

So I take it he's got some decent ball handling skills? He's going to need to be able to create a bit to play the 3.

He can handle it pretty well for a player his size...What I like the most was the power dribble, mid range pull up...tough shot.

I can see that, but the names Cory Johnson, Wes Eikmeier, Clinton Mann, Marcus Brister, Dominique Buckley, and Clayton Vette all echo in my mind as guys with low-major offeres and us, and that came for a year or two and couldn't compete, and left for to go to a low-major school.

My opinion is that part of the reason are in the situation we are in is because we have lost so many players that the staff reached on and couldn't develop. We aren't going to get better unless we are competitng for high mid-major talent.

Sure, a few guys you offer early blow and and it's nice to have gotten there first, but more often than not these guys with low major offers end up having low major talent.

I just talked to a family friend who is in the coaching tree at Linn-Mar and he said that Jarrod is very skinny but will put on weight, is a Cyclone. He also said that he is very good offensively but his defense leaves some to be desired much of which comes from only going against a high level of talent for two year so far. I asked him about his IQ and he said with 100 being average Jarrod is about 120.
